Wright was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday, the Boston Globe reports. The move created a roster spot for Saturday's starter, Joe Kelly, who was activated from the disabled list after experiencing some soreness in his biceps. Wright will join the rotation at Triple-A Pawtucket and serve as the first callup should Boston need a starter.

Wright picked up a much-deserved win in relief, allowing two runs on six hits, walking three and striking out one over five innings as the Red Sox bested the Yankees 6-5 in a 19 inning marathon on Friday night. This early in the season it's nice to have a knuckleballer in the pen to eat innings when the game is extended that many innings. Wright was originally scheduled to start Saturday, but Boston announced earlier in the day that Joe Kelly will get that assignment meaning Wright's super effort may have netted him a ticket to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Joe Kelly (biceps) will replace Wright as the starter for Saturday's game against the Yankees, CSN New England's Sean McAdam reports. It was previously believed that Kelly would make one more minor-league rehab start, but the Red Sox apparently decided that he's ready. Wright will either stay with the team as a long reliever or join the rotation at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Wright will get the start Saturday for the Red Sox against the Yankees, the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber reports. The Red Sox will give Joe Kelly one more tuneup at Low-A Greenville on Saturday and then he will presumably be ready to take his spot back in the big league rotation. Wright certainly has a shot at getting enough run support to get the win, but his strikeout totals in the minor leagues suggest that his upside is very limited.

Wright threw 95 pitches and six innings in a minor-league intrasquad game Monday, the Boston Globe reports. Both Wirght and Joe Kelly (biceps) pitched, but Kelly was limited to five innings and 78 pitches. That suggests the Red Sox may let Wright, who is on the 25-man roster, get the start this weekend when a fifth starter is needed. Manager John Farrell said it would be ideal if Kelly was at 95 pitches before making a start in the regular season.

Wright allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks in 3.2 innings against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Wright obviously struggled to control the knuckler, but he was pleased with the movement he got and thought there were some close pitches that could have gone for strikes. He's probably going to start the season with Boston, taking any starts for which Joe Kelly (biceps) would have been in line.

Wright pitched three scoreless and hitless innings before a two-out error in the fourth led to five unearned runs in Saturday's game against Tampa Bay. Wright was unable to pitch around the error and finished with five hits allowed the three walks while striking out three. If Joe Kelly (biceps) opens the season on the disabled list -- and it's trending that way -- Wright could start the season in Boston.

Wright pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two against the Phillies on Sunday. Wright, who is first in line as a depth starter, has allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and four walks in 10 spring innings. Boston used 11 starters in 2014, including Wright, so it's very likely we see him making a few starts this season.

Wright tossed three scoreless innings in Monday's win over the Mets, WEEI.com reports. He surrendered two hits and a walk. Wright said he's feeling much better this spring compared to 2014 when he entered training camp after having undergone sports hernia surgery. Joe Kelly developed some biceps soreness Monday, which gets us to thinking about Boston's starting depth. Wright is probably the first in line for an emergency start if manager John Farrell needs to reach down to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Wright allowed one unearned run and struck out two in two innings of a split-squad game against Baltimore on Saturday. Wright has just 10 games of major league experience, but at age 30, he's a poised hurler who will be called on when Boston's needs an emergency / fill-in starter this season. He'll get the nod over the more prized prospects, based on his experience and status on the 40-man roster.
