Gsellman (illness) returned to the team prior to Wednesday's game but manager Mickey Callaway is uncertain if he will be able to pitch, "He's going to be a little weak, (he) hasn't eaten in a couple days," Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gsellman was unavailable Tuesday due to strep throat, and though he's back in the clubhouse, it doesn't look like he's healthy enough to pitch at the moment. There's obviously a chance that his condition will improve over the next few hours, but it's best to stay away from the right-hander until he's fully recovered. Look for Seth Lugo and Jerry Blevins to be utilized in any save opportunities if Gsellman is unable to pitch.

Gsellman is unavailable for Tuesday's game against the Cubs due to strep throat, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gsellman is away from the team recovering from the illness. It's not yet known when he'll be cleared to return, leaving Seth Lugo and Jerry Blevins to handle any save chances in the meantime. Gsellman should be considered day-to-day.

Gsellman gave up one hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his eighth save of the season in a 3-0 win over the Nationals.
EDGE Analysis
While he has yet to get a real crack at the full-time closer gig, Gsellman has been very effective lately for the Mets, posting a 1.80 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB over his last 18 appearances (20 innings) with one win, five saves and five holds. Anthony Swarzak (shoulder) doesn't appear to be close to returning, so look for Gsellman to continue in his current role at least into September.

Gsellman tossed a perfect ninth inning and picked up the save in Monday's 8-5 win over New York.
EDGE Analysis
Gsellman has gone 3-for-3 on save opportunities over his last 10 appearances out of the bullpen, and he figures to continue to be deployed in save situations with Anthony Swarzak (shoulder) on the shelf. Jerry Blevins is also a candidate to be used in the ninth inning moving forward, although the Mets currently have a murky closer situation. Gsellman owns a 3.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 58 strikeouts over 65.2 innings this season.

Gsellman picked up his 11th hold of the season in Monday's win over the Reds, allowing one hit in 1.1 scoreless innings while striking out two.
EDGE Analysis
The outing wasn't as effective as the box score would indicate, as Gsellman entered a 6-2 game with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning and promptly gave up a two-run single to Eugenio Suarez before striking out Mason Williams to end the rally. It's clear at this point Mets manager Mickey Callaway prefers Gsellman in a highest-leverage role rather than exclusively as a ninth-inning man, so even though there aren't any other obvious closing options in the team's bullpen right now, don't expect the right-hander to suddenly begin racking up a lot of saves.

Gsellman is slated to serve as the Mets' primary closer after Anthony Swarzak (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Swarzak was unavailable in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Braves while battling the injury, allowing Gsellman to step in and notch his sixth save of the season. With the former now set to miss the next week and a half, the ninth-inning role should belong to Gsellman exclusively, as the Mets don't have many effective, high-upside alternatives on hand in the bullpen. Mets manager Mickey Callaway is optimistic that Swarzak's absence will be a short one, so the team could be back to a two-man committee at closer by the middle of the month.

Gsellman gave up two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one in one inning in a non-save situation Saturday against the Pirates.
EDGE Analysis
He took the ball in the bottom of the eighth inning with the Pirates leading 3-0, and proceeded to dig an even bigger hole for his team. Gsellman had recorded just two outs (on July 25) since July 23, so it seems like the Mets just wanted to get him some work. The Mets are expected to go forward with Gsellman and Anthony Swarzak getting save chances, but both are pretty flimsy options relative to the rest of the closers in baseball.

Gsellman struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Sunday to pick up his third save of the season in a win over the Diamondbacks.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Mickey Callaway suggested after Jeurys Familia was reinstated from the disabled list that he "wouldn't be afraid" to use him in the ninth inning right away, but instead he called upon Familia in the eighth with the Mets down by a run, and then turned to Gsellman to close things out after the team rallied in the top of the ninth. In all likelihood Familia will regain closing duties soon enough, but Gsellman's solid numbers (2.79 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 41:17 K:BB in 42 innings) could keep him in the picture, especially if Familia continues to struggle as he did Sunday.

Gsellman is slated to work as a setup man for the Mets following Jeurys Familia's (shoulder) reinstatement from the 10-day disabled list ahead of Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, Matt Ehalt of The Bergen Record reports.
EDGE Analysis
As one of the Mets' top relievers this season, Gsellman was considered one of the likelier candidates to close for the Mets while Familia was sidelined. With the Mets going 2-6 during Familia's absence and Anthony Swarzak notching the lone save opportunity made available during that stretch, Gsellman didn't pay dividends for those who scooped him up in pursuit of help in the saves category. Gsellman should immediately settle back into a high-leverage role in front of Familia, whom manager Mickey Callaway stated he wouldn't be afraid to use in a save situation Sunday.

Gsellman allowed one hit and struck out two in two scoreless innings to pick up his sixth hold of the season in Sunday's win over the Yankees.
EDGE Analysis
With the Mets' bullpen in disarray and the team trying to snap an eight-game losing streak, manager Mickey Callaway elected to take no chances in protecting a 2-0 lead, using his best reliever in the seventh and eighth innings rather than saving Gsellman for the ninth. Jeurys Familia (shoulder) is currently on a rehab assignment and is expected back within the next week, but while he's out Gsellman still seems the most likely candidate for saves despite his usage Sunday.
