Pena was originally thought to have signed an NRI contract with the Giants, but it seems like the deal fell through within the past couple months. The 31-year-old will instead head overseas to raise his stock after putting together a .755 OPS in 87 big league at-bats last season, likely with the hopes of returning stateside in 2018.

The Giants have been decimated by a number of injuries to position players over the last few weeks, and everyday second baseman Joe Panik (concussion) has been no exception. Panik's ongoing absence has paved the way for Pena to pick up regular action at the keystone, and while he's gone 4-for-13 during that span, he doesn't pack much power or speed into his profile. Moreover, Panik appears to be closing in on a return, so any fantasy value Pena delivers will be short lived.

A collision with Mac Williamson in shallow right field Wednesday left Pena limping, but an MRI revealed no structural damage. The Giants will have to play a man down for a little while, with Pena expected to need 5-to-7 days before returning to the field, although there's some hope he will be available to pinch hit at some point this weekend.

Pena got the start at second in place of the sidelined Joe Panik (concussion). He went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the 13-11 loss to the Athletics.

There isn't a strict platoon at third between he and Conor Gillaspie, but manager Bruce Bochy seems to be finding a way to get both of them in the lineup several times a week as the Giants look to rest their starters during a stretch where they have played 10-consecutive games and have 10 more games ahead of them without a scheduled off day.

Pena is in the lineup and batting eighth for Wednesday's game against the Pirates.
