Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com was told be a "high-ranking Angels source" that there's no more truth to the Peter Bourjos-to-the-Nationals rumor now than there was in the offseason. And, Gonzalez says there was "zero" chance of it happening then. The Angels are reportedly talking to multiple teams about the speedy outfielder, but it appears that no deal is close and might be a longshot to happen. Bourjos' playing time has been curtailed big-time lately, but the Angels also likely having him as depth.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Nationals and Angels have had preliminary discussions about a trade that would send Peter Bourjos to Washington. It's not clear how far along they are in talks, but the Angels have a surplus of outfielders and the Nationals have been looking for a center fielder for a long time. The Angels would like a relief pitcher in return, but the Nationals would be more comfortable parting with one once Drew Storen (elbow) returns from the disabled list. They may also be in the market for a catcher now that Chris Iannetta will miss 6-8 weeks following wrist surgery. The Royals, Diamondbacks and Blue Jays also have checked on the availability of Bourjos.

Peter Bourjos was not in the lineup for the ninth time in 11 games on Wednesday. Releasing Bobby Abreu didn't really relieve the logjam in the Angels' outfield, as the April 27 promotion of Mike Trout merely added a superior player. Bourjos has been the biggest victim of that transaction. The 25-year-old speedster -- who also happens to be elite defensively -- is batting just .192/.259/.288. One wonders if LA would consider moving him to one of baseball's many clubs with a need for a center fielder. Snagging splinters instead of line drives seems like a waste of his ample talent. On the other hand, management justifiably enjoys having a nice outfield insurance policy on the roster with old men Vernon Wells and Torii Hunter manning the corners.

"We didn't use Peter as much as we want," explained Halos manager Mike Scioscia on Sunday. "He's got to play to contribute. And he will." The 25-year-old speedster is batting just .180/.255/.280 in 20 games this year.

We wouldn't give up on Bourjos in deeper mixed leagues, but fantasy owners will have to watch the lineup card carefully in the coming days.

The Angels are trying to work Mark Trumbo into the lineup as much as possible, so Bourjos will continue to sit on occasion until he starts hitting. The 25-year-old is hitting just .178 with 12 strikeouts over his first 45 at-bats this season. Trumbo will make the start in left field Friday while Vernon Wells slides into center.

Peter Bourjos legged out a three-run, inside-the-park home run in Wednesday's loss to the Twins. Bourjos made it home in 14 seconds after Josh Willingham misplayed a fifth-inning laser off the wall in deep left-center. It was his first "bomb" of the season, and 19th of his career. Bourjos' slow start (.214/.214/.429) isn't yet a concern, but he'd be well served not to struggle into the summer with Mike Trout biding his time at Triple-A Salt Lake.
