The 31-year-old southpaw's night ended there -- an admirable performance after he's endured so many struggles throughout the season. Corbin had entered Friday with six straight outings allowing four runs or more, so it was encouraging to see him have a bounce-back performance against a first-place team. He now owns a 5.82 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 107:41 K:BB over 133 innings and is set up for a favorable matchup against the Marlins next week.

While Corbin has long lined up to take the ball Friday, the club took until just a few hours before first pitch to confirm his as the starter for the series opener. The veteran southpaw is in the midst of a down season in which he's posted a 6.04 ERA, and 1.44 WHIP across 126.2 innings, but he seems extremely unlikely to lose his spot in the starting rotation given his track record and Washington's lack of other options.

The veteran 32-year-old hurler continues to struggle and has been unable to repeat the strong performances he's had in past years with the Nationals. Corbin has now allowed at least four runs in five straight starts while yielding nine homers in that span. He has an uninspiring 5.83 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB through 122 innings across 22 starts. The southpaw is projected to make his next start at home in a rematch with Atlanta next weekend.

Corbin will end up being pushed back one day in the pitching schedule after he was initially on tap to start Wednesday before the contest was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns within the Washington organization. Through his first two starts of the second half, Corbin has been lit up for 11 runs (10 earned) over 10.2 innings to bring his ERA up to 5.71 on the season. With Corbin in the third season of a six-year, $140 million contract and in the midst of a brutal campaign, he's unlikely to command much trade interest from contending clubs ahead of Friday's deadline.

Corbin won't start Wednesday against the Phillies since the game was postponed due to the Nationals' COVID-19 outbreak, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Trea Turner tested positive for the virus Tuesday and was removed during the first inning, and Washington has apparently had multiple players and coaches test positive. It remains to be seen who else is caught up in the outbreak. The game will be made up via a doubleheader Thursday, and Corbin should start one of those games, assuming he's available.
