Schuemann homered to give the Athletics a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning and fell a triple shy of the cycle in his first multi-hit game since Aug. 2. It was a much needed boost for the 27-year-old, as he entered Tuesday in a 2-for-32 slump over his previous 10 games. On the season, he is hitting .233 with seven home runs, 30 RBI, 48 runs scored and 11 steals across 371 plate appearances.

Schuemann is expected to see most of his reps at third base moving forward after the Athletics optioned Darell Hernaiz to Triple-A Las Vegas following Sunday's 4-3 win over the Brewers, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.

Schuemann has made each of his last 30 starts at shortstop, but he'll likely see fewer opportunities at that position moving forward with Jacob Wilson (hamstring) likely to return from the injured list ahead of Tuesday's series opener in Cincinnati. The Athletics are still expected to keep Schuemann in the lineup on at least a semi-regular basis by deploying him at the hot corner, where Hernaiz had been serving as the team's primary option prior to his demotion. Schuemann's last start at third base came back on July 19, which coincided with Wilson making his MLB debut as Oakland's starting shortstop before exiting that game early due to the hamstring strain.

For the first time since June 30, Schuemann will exit the starting nine and give way at shortstop to Darell Hernaiz, who was recently reinstated from the injured list. Schuemann took over as the Athletics' everyday shortstop shortly after Hernaiz was placed on the IL in mid-May, and though prospect Jacob Wilson was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on July 19 and was expected to threaten Schuemann's standing atop the depth chart, Wilson strained his hamstring in his MLB debut and went on the IL two days later. Despite those forgettable numbers, Schuemann may be in the early stages of a resurgence, now having hit safely in three of his past four games.
