Cardinals manager Tony La Russa confirmed that Matt Holliday (finger) will not start Wednesday's season finale against the Astros.
Holliday experienced additional discomfort in his right middle finger prior to Tuesday's game and was eventually pulled in the third inning. "I don't know what this means, beyond [Allen] Craig is playing left field tomorrow," said La Russa. "But it's not good news." La Russa wouldn't speculate about his available beyond Wednesday, but it's very possible he could be sidelined if the Cardinals make the postseason.

Matt Holliday was pulled from Tuesday's game in the third inning after aggravating his right middle finger injury.
Not good. We'll update Holliday's status when more is known, but he'll surely sit out the season finale and might be a question mark for the NLDS, should the Cardinals make it in. Allen Craig has replaced Holliday in left field.

Matt Holliday (finger) is back in the Cardinals' lineup Saturday.
Holliday hasn't played since last Tuesday due to inflammation in his right middle finger, but he made it through batting practice Friday with no issues and has been cleared to return. It's certainly possible that the injury will flare up again, but for now, feel free to return him to your lineup.

Matt Holliday (finger) took swings in the indoor batting cage Thursday.
Holliday began taking some swings off a tee on Tuesday and took more swings and also threw on Wednesday. The Cardinals haven't provided an update on his progress since before Wednesday's game, but there's still a chance he could be available at some point before the end of the season.

Matt Holliday (finger) had to cut Monday's hitting session short after just 10 swings.
He's presumably still feeling pain in his right middle finger. Holliday was able to play catch before Wednesday's game, but if he can't swing without any pain, obviously it makes it unlikely he'll return anytime soon. The Cardinals might have to make postseason play for him to have a shot to come back.
