Gibson has allowed two earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six over nine Grapefruit League innings.

Gibson has made three appearances in spring training, and he's performing just fine. The veteran right-hander signed a one-year deal with the Orioles in December, and he should be a lock for the rotation, especially given his encouraging outings so far. He struggled to a 5.05 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 144:48 K:BB across 167.2 innings with the Phillies last season, and at 35 years old, it's tough to imagine a significant improvement in his numbers this year.

Gibson has been eating innings at the big-league level for a full decade, but how much remains in the tank ahead of his age-35 season is unclear. His 5.05 ERA last season means he's finished above 5.00 in that category in two of the last three seasons, though he did post a 3.71 ERA in 2021 and hasn't seen a big drop in velocity. His 20.1 percent strikeout rate in 2022 was below average as usual, though allowing plenty of contact isn't quite as dangerous as it used to be in Baltimore now that the left-field fence has been pushed back. The veteran righty should have a good shot at a spot near the back of the Orioles' rotation to open the year, but his age means the bottom could fall out at any time without much warning.

Gibson (10-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings against the Nationals. He struck out seven.

Gibson got himself into trouble early in this one, walking the leadoff hitter on four straight pitches in the bottom of the first before allowing an RBI single to Luis Garcia later in the inning. He would then go on to allow five straight hits with two outs in the second, including a solo shot to Luke Voit to put the Phillies in a 6-1 hole. Gibson has now allowed five or more runs in three consecutive starts, while allowing seven runs in three of his last six.

Gibson yielded five runs on seven hits and two walks over five frames against Atlanta on Sunday. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision.

Surprisingly, Gibson was in line for the victory when he left the game but Atlanta would ultimately win in extras. He's been tagged with 24 runs over his last five starts, raising his season ERA from 4.08 to 4.84 during that span. The 34-year-old righty allowed two runs in the first inning Sunday and later coughed up a two-run shot to Dansby Swanson in the fourth. Gibson is lined up to make his final start of the regular season next week in Washington.

Gibson (10-7) took the loss Tuesday against Toronto, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and a walk while striking out three in five innings.

EDGE Analysis

Toronto's lineup got to Gibson early and often, scoring runs in four of his five frames. Five of the hits against him went for extra bases and 13 of the 27 batters he faced reached safely. It's been a disastrous September for Gibson, as he's posted a 9.68 ERA, 2.15 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB in 17.2 innings across four starts and he's seen his ERA rise from 4.08 to 4.71.

Gibson (10-6) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts over six innings against Miami.

EDGE Analysis

After allowing four singles and a run in the bottom of the first inning, Gibson settled in nicely. He allowed just three hits and did not surrender a walk or a run over the next five innings to earn his 15th quality start and position himself to earn his 10th win. After allowing 11 earned runs over 6.2 innings in his last two starts, the effort Wednesday was a great sign for the veteran. He'll take a 4.45 ERA into his next start.

Gibson did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk over five innings against the Marlins. He struck out two.

EDGE Analysis

Gibson allowed a third-inning solo homer from Lewin Diaz followed by an RBI double and RBI single before surrendering another solo home run to Joey Wendle in the fifth. The righty has now given up 11 runs in his last two starts following a stretch of nine games with a quality 2.80 ERA over 54.2 innings. The 34-year-old has allowed five home runs over his last five outings.

Gibson (9-6) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on five hits and four walks over 1.2 innings in a 13-1 loss to the Giants. He struck out two.

EDGE Analysis

After a 40-pitch first inning, Gibson handed out a couple more free passes in the second before Joc Pederson cashed in with a three-run homer. In total, Gibson needed 65 pitches to record five outs. He had been on a nice run coming into Friday's game, posting a 2.41 ERA over his previous six starts, but this was a reminder of the inconsistency and downside we've seen with Gibson throughout his career.

Gibson wasn't very efficient in Philadelphia's loss on Sunday, needing 105 pitches to record just 13 outs. Two runs scored against him on an error in the second inning before he allowed another run in each of the third and fourth frames. Gibson has been charged with fewer than four earned runs in seven of his last eight starts, posting a 3.21 ERA during that span. The veteran righty is lined up to face the Pirates at home next week.
