Gausman allowed three runs on six hits and struck out eight batters in 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
The eight whiffs are nice, but Gausman got into trouble with a wild pitch in the third inning and a parade of hits to start the fourth. He threw 48 of his 73 pitches for strikes in the appearance. The right-hander has yet to get through five innings in 2020, with a 5.40 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB across two outings. Gausman is expected to face the Rockies at Coors Field on Tuesday.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Gausman would start Thursday's game against the Padres, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
In his first outing of the season last week against the Dodgers, Gausman worked as the bulk reliever behind an opener (Tyler Anderson), but the arrangement appears to have been more of a one-off thing. Since Gausman was limited to four innings (58 pitches) in that appearance, he may face some light restrictions with his workload while he makes his first traditional start.

Gausman came on in relief in his season debut in Friday's 9-1 loss to the Dodgers, covering four innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out two.
EDGE Analysis
Gausman was expected to open the season as the team's third or fourth starter, but manager Gabe Kapler made the surprising choice to deploy the right-hander as a primary pitcher behind southpaw Tyler Anderson in the Giants' second game of 2020. Since the Giants were trailing 2-1 when Gausman entered the contest in the third inning, he was spared the loss in the 58-pitch appearance. It's unclear if Gausman will be used as a traditional starter or as a primary pitcher when his turn comes up again Thursday against the Padres or Friday against the Rangers.

Gausman will work as either the Giants' No. 3 or No. 4 starter this year, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
He had a 4.35 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB in 10.1 innings (four starts) this spring. Gausman has teased with his potential for years, and this could be his last chance to make it as a starter. He has a 94-mph fastball and excellent splitter but has been unable to develop a reliably effective breaking ball.

Gausman agreed to a one-year, $9 million contract with the Giants on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Gausman can earn a further $1 million in performance bonuses, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. The righty has alternated between above-average and below-average ERAs in each of his seven seasons in the league, but his 2019 campaign was a particularly poor one in that category, as he slumped to a 5.72 ERA in 102.1 innings for the Braves and Reds. His 25.3 percent strikeout rate, 7.1 percent walk rate and 3.98 FIP were all considerably more encouraging, however, so the Giants have good reason to bet on a bounceback season in Gausman's age-29 campaign.

Gausman was non-tendered by the Reds on Monday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gausman didn't look himself during the 2019 campaign, accruing a 5.72 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with a 114:32 K:BB over 102.1 innings of work across stops with Atlanta and Cincinnati. Despite this, he should get a chance to earn a starting job elsewhere after failing to agree on a deal with the Reds.

Gausman (illness) rejoined the Reds and will be available out of the bullpen for Sunday's game against the Mets, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gausman was one of at least five Reds players who was sent home ahead of Saturday's contest while battling flu-like symptoms. Only Gausman will return to action ahead of the series finale, but the other ill players should benefit from the team off day coming Monday. Gausman's last appearance came as a starter back on Sept. 16, but the Reds' current pitching schedule doesn't call for him to make any additional turns through the rotation during the final week of the season.

Gausman was sent home Saturday with flu-like symptoms, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gausman was sent home sick along with Freddy Galvis, Michael Lorenzen, Robert Stephenson and Josh VanMeter. Depending on how they feel Sunday, some or all of them could stay away from the club until Tuesday.

Gausman (3-9) gave up three runs on three hits and no walks while striking out two through two innings to take the loss against the Cubs on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Gausman wasn't expected to pitch deep in his first start with the Reds, but he allowed a three-run home run in the first frame that handed him the loss. Gausman had a 4.02 ERA in 11 appearances as a reliever for the Reds coming into this game and will likely return to his bullpen role. The 28-year-old has a 5.99 ERA with 109 strikeouts through 28 appearances this season.

Gausman is slated to start Monday's game against the Cubs, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Reds have already been running out a five-man rotation lately, but manager David Bell may have wanted to build in an extra day of rest for the team's other starters while the season winds down. Enter Gausman, who has made all 11 of his appearances with the Reds out of the bullpen since being scooped up off waivers in early August. Gausman hasn't covered more than two innings in any of his outings with Cincinnati, so even if he performs well Monday, he may struggle to work deep enough into the contest to factor into the decision.
