Smith (back) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was slated to make his major league debut Monday, but was scratched prior to the game due to what was thought to be back spasms. It turns out that the catcher actually has sacroiliac joint dysfunction, which has a bit of a cloudy recovery time. There's a chance that he could come off the DL around the earliest date that he is eligible, but it could also sideline him for longer depending on how he feels further down the road. His status should become clearer as his rehab process moves along.

Smith was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
It's the first taste of the big leagues for the 27-year-old Smith, who was batting .345 with two homers over eight games at Charlotte. During his stay with the White Sox, Smith doesn't figure to see much action behind Dioner Navarro at catcher, and will head back to the minors once Alex Avila (hamstring) is ready to return from the DL.

EDGE Analysis
Smith had a steep hill to climb in his quest for a spot on the White Sox's 25-man roster out of spring, with Alex Avila and Dioner Navarro (ankle) ahead of him on the depth chart. Doing himself favors with three hits, including two doubles, in seven Cactus League at-bats, the performance ultimately wasn't enough for Smith, who will provide organizational depth at catcher.

The White Sox optioned Smith to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday, the Daily Herald reports.
Smith had a 0.813 OPS in 106 games for Double-A Birmingham last season, and he should spend most, if not all, of 2015 at Triple-A Charlotte. Either Rob Brantly or Geovany Soto will serve as the White Sox's No. 2 catcher after both Smith and Adrian Nieto were optioned to Charlotte.
