Phegley finished the spring hitting .218/.259/.455 in 20 games. It wasn't a great spring at the plate for Phegley, but he did enough to earn an Opening Day big league roster spot. Stephen Vogt figures to serve as the regular starting catcher, but Phegley will be the backup option and could see some at bats against left-handed pitching.

Phegley appears to have an excellent shot to be the A's second catcher this season, reports Jane Lee of MLB.com. Phegley, acquired in the Jeff Samardzija trade, will likely serve as the right-handed platoon partner to starting catcher Stephen Vogt. Vogt is still recovering from off-season foot surgery, so Phegley could see more than usual at-bats early in the season. Phegley has struggled in his major league stints so far with a .207 batting average over 241 at-bats, but showed significant pop in Triple-A in 2014 with 23 homers and a .861 OPS in 419 at-bats.

The White Sox traded Phegley to the A's on Tuesday along with Marcus Semien, Chris Bassitt and Rangel Ravelo in exchange for Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa. Phegley has shown improved on-base skills and increased pop at the Triple-A level over the past two seasons, smacking 15 and 23 homers in 2013 and 2014, respectively. His .274/.331/.530 batting line with Triple-A Charlotte last season was only good enough to earn him 10 starts with the big club, but Phegley could be in line for a significant increase in playing time in 2015 while perhaps serving as the backup to Derek Norris.

Phegley hit his first big-league homer of the year Thursday against Kansas City as part of a 2-for-4 day. He hit the long ball off James Shields -- pretty nice. However, Phegley hasn't otherwise made much of an impression in September action, having gone 4-for-30 with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Phegley went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the White Sox's win over the Royals on Tuesday. The start was Phegley's third start of the past week, and he finally notched his first hit in 14 at-bats this season. He should see more plating time down the stretch as the team rests Tyler Flowers after a long season.

Phegley was among the White Sox's roster additions Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Phegley should split backup catcher duties with Adrien Nieto. Tyler Flowers has started an overwhelming majority of games behind the plate this season, but Phegley could see a start or two per week in September.

White Sox optioned C Josh Phegley, RHP Andre Rienzo and LHP Eric Surkamp to Triple-A Charlotte; reassigned INFs Andy Wilkins and RHPs Chris Beck and Cody Winiarski to minor league camp. Tyler Flowers will be Chicago's Opening Day catcher, and Rule 5 pick Adrian Nieto, barring something unforeseen, appears ticketed for backup duty. If so, Nieto will make history and become the first catcher since Butch Wynegar in 1976 (and second overall) to leap from Class-A to the bigs. Rienzo and Surkamp will both be back with the Sox at some point in 2014.

Josh Phegley belted his second homer of the Cactus League season as the White Sox and Indians played to a 2-2 draw on Friday. He finished the afternoon 2-for-3, raising his spring average to .278 (5-for-18). He currently sits behind Tyler Flowers on the White Sox depth chart behind the plate, but can certainly flip that with an impressive showing this spring.

Josh Phegley (flu) was scratched from Saturday's scheduled game against the Indians. Saturday's contest ended up getting rained out, but Phegley didn't do any work on the side and is likely to be held out of Sunday's game as well. He's competing this spring with Tyler Flowers for the team's starting gig behind the dish.

Josh Phegley (hand) went 0-for-3 with a run scored in his return to the lineup Friday. Phegley had a minor injury to his right index finger in the final game before the All-Star break, but was able to return without missing any time. He's batting .226 with three home runs and nine RBI in his first nine games since being called up by the White Sox.
