Fields allowed just one hit in three scoreless appearances for Oklahoma City before being summoned back to the big club. The 31-year-old owns a respectable 3.00 ERA and 32:8 K:BB through 27 innings with the Dodgers this season. Mike Freeman was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Hitters figured him out, and now he's out to make room for the return of Sergio Romo to the Dodgers bullpen.

Fields surrendered three runs on two hits and two walks and retired just two batters in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Reds.

Fields emerged as one of manager Dave Roberts' top setup arms after delivering a 0.84 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 21.1 innings over the first two months of the season, but he's been a disaster since the calendar flipped to June. In five appearances on the month, he's given up four runs -- all via the long ball -- in only five innings. Roberts may have Fields work out the kinks in middle relief in his subsequent appearances before the right-hander is trusted in high-leverage spots again.

This was easily the 31-year-old's worst outing of the season, as it was the first time he gave up more than one earned run in 23 appearances. The 32-year-old has gotten off the best start of his career in 2017, posting a 0.55 ERA through 16.1 innings. A big part of veteran's success has been a career-best 7.0 K/BB ratio. His 92.3 percent strand rate seems unsustainable, but nothing else in his peripherals points to a big regression (1.18 FIP). Sergio Romo has struggled this season and Pedro Baez has been pitching above his head (5.11 FIP), so Fields could find himself becoming the Dodgers' top right-handed setup man if he keeps this up.

Fields pitched 1.1 scoreless innings without allowing a baserunner and recording two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season during Friday's win over San Diego.

EDGE Analysis

The save is a bit misleading, as Fields entered in the eighth inning when the Dodgers led 4-2. However, Los Angeles scored four runs in the top of the ninth, and Fields remained in the game to record the final three outs. It's likely Kenley Jansen would have pitched the ninth frame if it was still a save situation.
