Litsch, 29, hadn't played affiliate ball since the 2011 due to shoulder injuries that ultimately ended his career. The right-hander spent his entire career as a member of the Blue Jays organization, posting a 27-27 record, 4.16 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 418 big-league innings.

It's essentially a last-ditch effort to save his playing career, as the procedure will graft bone and cartilage onto the back of his right arm and shoulder to compensate for cartilage lost through an infection earlier this year. The procedure is typically reserved for older people, so there's no telling whether his arm will be able to hold up with the rigors of throwing a baseball. His quality of life will be improved, at the very least.
