Chavez struggled on Thursday, allowing two runs and seven hits over 3.2 innings.
This is not the start Chavez needed in his battle for a spot in the A's rotation. He has now allowed 24 hits and four walks over 16 innings and could be falling behind Drew Pomeranz for the fifth starter spot.

Chavez allowed two runs over four innings in Friday's spring game, but did strike out five Rockies.
Chavez is currently in the midst of a four-way battle for three open rotation spots in the A's rotation. Friday's outing did not hurt his chances, but did not make any sort of positive statement either. Chavez was effective as a starter for the A's in 2014 (3.44 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 125.2 as a starter), which has to help his cause, but the A's have been non-committal to date regarding his chances. If he were to lose out on a rotation spot, Chavez would likely work as a long reliever out of the bullpen.

Chavez and the A's avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.15 million contract Monday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
Chavez finished last season as a reliever, but he opened the campaign as a starter, and will have an opportunity to do so again in 2015 with Jarrod Parker (elbow) and A.J. Griffin (ankle) unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. Chavez posted a 3.44 ERA and struck out 119 batters in 125.2 innings over 21 starts for the A's last season.

Jesse Chavez was roughed up by the Astros on Monday, allowing six runs over 5 1/3 innings to fall to 8-7.
Chavez has been blessed with an easy schedule lately, but he hasn't capitalized, giving up 11 runs in 16 2/3 innings in two starts against the Astros and one versus the Mariners. He's one start away from surpassing his career high in innings, and the anticipated trip to the bullpen might come sooner rather than later. If so, the A's would turn to Tommy Milone or Drew Pomeranz in his place.

Jesse Chavez got back in the win column by allowing two earned runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings Wednesday in a 9-7 victory over the Astros.
He struck out seven and walked two. Chavez has issued at least two free passes in six straight starts. The excess base runners have been an issue, but Chavez has done a good job in recent starts minimizing damage. He entered this game with a 4.32 July ERA despite a 1.80 WHIP in those three outings. Now 8-6 with a 3.14 ERA, Chavez has a rematch with Brad Peacock scheduled for Monday.

Jesse Chavez yielded three runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mariners on Saturday.
Chavez will head into the All-Star break with just one quality start in his last four tries, and he's rapidly approaching his career high for innings. We expect that the A's will sent him to the bullpen at some point, though it doesn't figure to happen immediately after the break.

Jesse Chavez worked six shutout innings, striking out nine, in a 5-0 victory against the Giants on Monday.
Chavez scattered four hits and walked two to win his first outing since June 15, and just his third since May 19. The right-hander boated a 2.78 ERA at the end of May, but he'd gone just 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA in six starts since the beginning of June prior to tonight. He gave up a fluky .340 BABIP during that stretch, though his 28/14 K/BB rate in 35 innings was asking for trouble. Having improved to 7-5 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, Chavez is scheduled to start Saturday in Seattle.

Jesse Chavez surrendered five earned runs over five innings Wednesday in the A's loss to the Tigers.
It was the second straight rough outing for Chavez, who yielded five runs in six innings last Friday against the Marlins. He gave up eight hits and walked four on Wednesday afternoon in Detroit as the A's suffered their third series sweep of the season. Chavez is 6-5 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.27 WHIP on the year.

Jesse Chavez lasted six innings and allowed five runs in a 9-5 no-decision against the Marlins on Friday.
In a somewhat perplexing outing, Chavez was cruising up 4-0 until the sixth inning, when he allowed all five of the runs on his line. The Marlins only had one extra-base hit in the inning, but they strung together RBI by Garrett Jones, Marcel Ozuna, Donovan Solano, Jeff Mathis and Jeff Baker to put the A's in a 5-4 hole. Oakland later tied the game and took Chavez off the hook before scoring four in the ninth to win 9-5. Even with the rocky outing, Chavez still holds an ERA of 2.94. He will look to rebound against Detroit in his next start.

Jesse Chavez pitched seven scoreless innings in the A's victory over the Red Sox on Saturday.
Oakland wound up winning in the bottom of the 10th inning on a walkoff RBI single from Coco Crisp. Chavez held the Red Sox to three hits while fanning four. He ran into a few road bumps in late May and early June but has been dominant now in two straight outings. Chavez will carry a 2.71 ERA and 1.18 WHIP into his next start at Miami.
