The Marlins will pick up Mathis' $1.5 million option for 2015, MLB.com reports. Mathis slashed just .200/.263/.274 over 175 at-bats in a backup role during his age-31 season, but provided the Marlins' with a strong defensive option behind the dish. Mathis also provides a strong veteran presence to work with a young and talented pitching staff. His return likely means that prospect catcher J.T. Realmuto, who spent September with the big club, will head back to the minors to tune his game at the start of 2015.

Mathis went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in Sunday's loss to the Rockies. Mathis brought the lumber Sunday while spelling Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the series finale, putting the Marlins on the board with an RBI double in the top of the second. While Mathis brings solid defense behind the plate, he simply does not have enough punch in his bat (.205/.270/.388) to be considered for a larger role.

Jeff Mathis delivered a two-run double in the seventh inning on Friday, leading the Marlins to a 2-0 victory over the Astros. That would prove to be more than enough run support for Brad Hand who was outstanding on the hill for the Marlins. That critical knock was the lone hit in four at-bats on the night for Mathis, who is hitting just .200/.285/.282 on the season.

Jeff Mathis went 4-for-5 and hit his first spring homer Sunday against the Tigers. If you needed another reason to be skeptical of exhibition stats: Mathis has finished at .300 or better in four of his previous seven springs, topping out at .391 in 2011. He's at .276 right now. Mathis is slated to back up Jarrod Saltalamacchia in Miami this season.

Jeff Mathis is done for the season after an MRI has revealed a fractured right thumb. Mathis suffered what he thought was a bruise a couple weeks ago, but it turns out the injury is more serious. It's not clear whether he'll have surgery, but getting ready for spring training won't be a problem.

Jeff Mathis (thumb) could return to the Marlins starting lineup as early as Sunday. Mathis bruised his right thumb while blocking a pitch during Monday's game, and has been sidelined since. He'll start swinging a bat in the cages on Saturday, and as long as all goes well, will return to the lineup within the next few days.

Jeff Mathis went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, homer and two RBI in Sunday's 6-5 victory against the Giants. At sunrise on Sunday morning, Miami owned two nondescript Mathis': Doug and Jeff. Doug, a 30-year-old minor league pitcher, was dealt to Pittsburgh for a PTBNL or cash on Sunday afternoon. As that transaction was being finalized, Jeff had one of his best games of the season. This was Mathis' first homer since June 30 and his first double since July 3. His weak bat renders Mathis fantasy irrelevant outside of deep NL-only formats.
