Marlins acquired C Jeff Mathis from the Blue Jays in a 12-player trade. Mathis, who turns 30 in March, recently signed a two-year, $3 million extension which includes a $1.5 million club option for 2015. The .198 career hitter figures to be backup for youngster Rob Brantly.

Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun reports that Jeff Mathis will be part of the megadeal with the Marlins. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Juan C. Rodriguez says the Marlins will also get pitching prospect Anthony DeSclafani. It appears that they are the final two players the Fish will receive in addition to Yunel Escobar, Adeiny Hechavarria, Henderson Alvarez, Jake Marisnick and Justin Nicolino. Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buerhle, Emilio Bonifacio and John Buck are headed to Toronto along with a reported $4 million in a deal that could be finalized later Tuesday.

Jeff Mathis (flu) served as a defensive replacement in Wednesday night's loss to the Yankees. Mathis seems to be over the flu-like symptoms that began plaguing him over the weekend. He's batting .217/.250/.394 in 67 games this season as Toronto's backup catcher.

Jeff Mathis was scratched from the Blue Jays' lineup Sunday due to the flu. It's evidently going around the Jays' clubhouse, as Yunel Escobar is out Sunday with the flu, as well. J.P. Arencibia is now catching, while Yan Gomes enters the lineup at DH.

Jeff Mathis was one of Toronto's few offensive bright spots on Wednesday, finishing 1-for-3 with a solo homer in a 12-2 loss to the Rays. It was the backup's second start in three games over J.P. Arencibia, who is batting only 2-for-32 (.063). For his part, Mathis is playing out of his mind with a .444 batting average in three starts. His career batting average hovers around the Mendoza Line, so we don't see him sustaining this pace for much longer.

Blue Jays and C Jeff Mathis avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. Mathis, who was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter, was acquired from the Angels earlier this month. The 27-year-old batted just .175/.225/.259 over 281 plate appearances this season, but is highly-regarded defensively. He'll serve as the primary backup to J.P. Arencibia in 2012.

Blue Jays acquired C Jeff Mathis from the Angels for LHP Brad Mills. Mathis, who turns 28 in March, obviously offers very little in the way of upside, but Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos apparently values his defensive contributions. He's due close to $2 million in arbitration this winter. A career .194 hitter, look for him to serve as the backup to J.P. Arencibia next season.
