Jake Westbrook allowed just two runs and four hits over eight innings Thursday in the Cardinals' 6-2 win over the Mets.
Avoiding what would have been a sweep in New York. It'd sure be a boon for the Cardinals if Westbrook could finally turn his season around. He got 15 outs on the ground today and he walked only one in lowering his ERA to 5.04.

The Cardinals will go with Jake Westbrook, Chris Carpenter, Jaime Garcia, Kyle Lohse and Kyle McClellan for the first five games after the All-Star break.
It's a different order than was given before, and it's interesting that they'd go with Westbrook first considering he's been their worst starter to this point. The Cards will likely try to limit McClellan's innings down the stretch as much as possible, and he might even wind up back in the bullpen if they acquire a starter.

Jake Westbrook allowed five runs before recording an out on Wednesday evening, ultimately allowing seven runs on eight hits and one walk in 4 1/3 innings of St. Louis' 9-8, 13-inning loss to the Reds.
Westbrook served up a home run to Chris Heisey on the first pitch of the game before allowing a single to Edgar Renteria and walking Joey Votto. Brandon Phillips then laced a two-RBI triple before Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer. The nightmare start comes just one outing after Westbrook held the Rays to two hits in seven scoreless innings of work. Tonight was the fourth time in his past five starts that he's allowed at least four runs. For the season, he now owns a 5.34 ERA and 1.61 WHIP.

Jake Westbrook didn't have his sinker working Friday, as he surrendered four runs on 10 hits and a walk over just 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays.
The Cardinals tied the game up in the sixth to get Westbrook off the hook, but the right-hander's ERA is now up to 5.32 and his WHIP is at 1.66. He hasn't registered a quality start in over a month. Westbrook is traditionally a better second half pitcher, and the Cards are counting on that being the case again this year. He faces the Orioles next week.
