The Rockies acquired McCarthy this offseason, but the Rockies have a versatile roster, so he could face significant competition for the starting role in right field. Moniak may be the primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching, but Willi Castro, Troy Johnston and Tyler Freeman also figure to factor in at a corner outfield spot. Most importantly, McCarthy will need to bounce back as a hitter after posting only a .592 OPS across 222 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2025.

McCarthy appeared in just 67 games for the Diamondbacks during 2025 and finished the season with a career-low .592 OPS across 222 plate appearances. The Diamondbacks would experience a cost savings by moving one of these arbitration-eligible center fielders and using a younger player as the backup. McCarthy has been the more dangerous hitter, while Thomas is considered the better glove. Among the potential replacements are Blaze Alexander, Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa. Jordan Lawlar, who is blocked at shortstop by Geraldo Perdomo and didn't handle third base well during a September cameo in 2025, has played a handful of games in center field during winter ball and is also an option.

This was McCarthy's first homer since Aug. 19 versus the Guardians. He hit .194 (12-for-62) over 21 games between long balls, including just 3-for-18 (.167) in his last seven contests. The outfielder has produced a lackluster .207/.251/.343 slash line with four homers, 20 RBI, 18 runs scored and six stolen bases over 214 plate appearances in the majors this year, a massive step down from hitting .285 with a .749 OPS in 2024.
