He's become one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the last couple of weeks and seems to have supplanted Alek Thomas in the Diamondbacks' outfield pecking order for now.

Since July 27, he's slashing .444/.464/.741 with seven extra-base hits, 15 RBI and 11 runs scored. His reverse splits this season are eye-opening too. This year, he's slashing .369/.424/.488 against lefties compared to .275/.355/.435 against righties. For the season, McCarthy is now hitting .303/.375/.451 with six homers, 36 RBI, 45 runs, 16 steals and a 25:55 BB:K in 316 plate appearances.

McCarthy isn't known for his power, having never hit more than eight homers in a single season. McCarthy's swung a hot bat the last two weeks, going 19-for-41 (.463) with one home run, seven RBI, eight runs and three stolen bases. He's hit well against lefties this season, posting a .359/.419/.462 line against southpaws, better than Carroll (.185/.270/.282) and Thomas (.143/.182/.238).

McCarthy had started in eight of the Diamondbacks' previous nine games, but he still looks to be the club's fourth outfielder behind Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel and Alek Thomas. Though he's a left-handed hitter, McCarthy is slashing .360/.422/.467 over 83 plate appearances against southpaws this season and should continue to be a regular part of the starting nine when the Diamondbacks face lefties. McCarthy may have to settle for more of a part-time role, however, when the Diamondbacks face righties and have all their key outfielders available.

McCarthy scored the first run of the game in the third inning as a result of a two-out triple and a MacKenzie Gore wild pitch. The outfielder finished with his second straight three-hit contest and his third multi-hit performance over his past five games. Over that span, McCarthy is batting a blistering .545 (12-for-22) with a double, two triples, five runs and two thefts.

McCarthy will start in center field and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

EDGE Analysis

Though McCarthy doesn't have a direct path to an everyday role, Arizona has now been able to squeeze him into the lineup for five straight games while giving four days off to Joc Pederson, three to Alek Thomas and one apiece to Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel during that stretch. All of the absences for Pederson, Thomas and Carroll have come against left-handed pitching, so McCarthy at least looks to be viewed as a short-side bat, even though he's a left-handed hitter himself. McCarthy has helped his case for holding down a semi-regular role by going 9-for-18 with a stolen base, four runs and three RBI over the previous four contests.
