McCarthy had started in eight of the Diamondbacks' previous nine games, but he still looks to be the club's fourth outfielder behind Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel and Alek Thomas. Though he's a left-handed hitter, McCarthy is slashing .360/.422/.467 over 83 plate appearances against southpaws this season and should continue to be a regular part of the starting nine when the Diamondbacks face lefties. McCarthy may have to settle for more of a part-time role, however, when the Diamondbacks face righties and have all their key outfielders available.

McCarthy scored the first run of the game in the third inning as a result of a two-out triple and a MacKenzie Gore wild pitch. The outfielder finished with his second straight three-hit contest and his third multi-hit performance over his past five games. Over that span, McCarthy is batting a blistering .545 (12-for-22) with a double, two triples, five runs and two thefts.

Though McCarthy doesn't have a direct path to an everyday role, Arizona has now been able to squeeze him into the lineup for five straight games while giving four days off to Joc Pederson, three to Alek Thomas and one apiece to Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel during that stretch. All of the absences for Pederson, Thomas and Carroll have come against left-handed pitching, so McCarthy at least looks to be viewed as a short-side bat, even though he's a left-handed hitter himself. McCarthy has helped his case for holding down a semi-regular role by going 9-for-18 with a stolen base, four runs and three RBI over the previous four contests.

McCarthy went 5-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's win over the Pirates.
EDGE Analysis
McCarthy was a thorn in Pittsburgh's side all night, reaching in all five of his trips to the plate while also sparking a two-run inning for Arizona in the fifth with a leadoff single. It marked the outfielder's first five-hit game of the season, and he brought his season average up from .269 to .285 with the performance. For the month he's batting .317 (13-for-41) with three RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases. However, McCarthy has also recorded just three extra-base hits since June 16.

A day after being held out of the starting lineup against a right-hander in favor of Alek Thomas fresh off the injured list, the lefty-hitting McCarthy was back in there Wednesday against a righty. The presumption is that Thomas will be in lineups most nights against right-handers, and that his absence Wednesday was due to a return from a three-month absence. McCarthy's playing time takes a hit with Thomas' return, but he can still have value in a part-time role. He's second on the club with 13 steals.

McCarthy had been a regular against righties, but his playing time is set to take a hit, as the Diamondbacks welcomed back Alek Thomas from a hamstring injury. Thomas' injury, which kept him out for the last three months, resulted in more playing time for McCarthy. He hits lefties better than Thomas, but the righty-hitting Randal Grichuk (.817 OPS against lefties) should be the primary fill-in for Thomas against southpaws.
