Irvin has only been used in relief this spring but manager Davey Martinez said he will be a part of the starting rotation, MASN reports. Irvin gave up six earned runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings in Friday's spring outing against Houston. "We've got to get him to relax a little bit. He's working on a bunch of different secondary pitches. I'm going to sit down and talk to him: His next outing, just get the ball in the zone and work ahead," said Martinez.
EDGE Analysis
Irvin had struggled to begin the spring by allowing seven earned runs and seven hits in 3.2 innings with a 17.18 ERA in two outings. It sounds like his manager isn't too worried, however. Still, Irvin's job can't be too secure after he had a 4.61 ERA with a mediocre 7.4 K/9 and troublesome 4.0 BB/9 last season.

Irvin was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right ankle tendinitis, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Irvin suffered the season-ending injury during his start Thursday against Atlanta, in which he surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and three walks over just 2.2 innings of work. He'll finish the 2023 campaign with a 3-7 record, 4.61 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 99:54 K:BB in 121 innings (24 starts) for the Nationals.

Irvin (3-7) took the loss Thursday against Atlanta, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
After tossing a solid 23 innings across four August starts to the tune of a 2.35 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB, Irvin has had a rough time in September. Over four outings this month, he's produced a 6.38 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 15:13 K:BB over 18.1 innings. Irvin looks to turn things around in his next start, scheduled to be against Atlanta again but on the road.

Irvin (3-6) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on three hits and five walks over 4.2 innings as the Nationals fell 5-3 to the Brewers. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander kept Milwaukee off the board for four innings, but his command and control issues caught up to him in the fifth as two free passes set up a three-run homer for William Contreras. Irvin has walked multiple batters in five straight starts, but he's largely been able to escape the jams he's created, posting a 2.93 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB through 27.2 innings over that stretch. He hasn't won a game since July 21 however, limiting his fantasy appeal in traditional 5x5 formats. He'll face a tough matchup in his next outing, likely to come at home next week against Atlanta.

Irvin came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Nationals' 7-6 extra-innings win over the Dodgers, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
The 26-year-old righty delivered his fourth quality start in his last five outings and out-pitched more heralded rookie Bobby Miller in the process, but Irvin saw his fourth win of the season slip away when Kyle Finnegan blew the save in the ninth. Since the beginning of August, Irvin has produced an impressive 2.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 30:12 K:BB through 34 innings as he looks to lock himself into the Nats' 2024 rotation plans. He's next set to take the mound next weekend in Milwaukee.

Irvin came away with a no-decision Friday in the Nationals' 8-5 extra-innings loss to the Marlins, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander got the hook after 80 pitches (44 strikes) with the score tied 3-3, marking his seventh straight start without a decision and snapping his quality start streak at three. Irvin has pitched relatively well over that stretch however, posting a 3.43 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB through 39.1 innings. With Washington looking to manage the workload of its younger arms, the 26-year-old likely won't take the mound again until next weekend in a home start against the Dodgers.

Irvin came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Nationals' 3-2 win over the Marlins, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
In a matchup of rookie right-handers, Irvin battled the more heralded Eury Perez to a stalemate over six frames, leaving the mound after 96 pitches (58 strikes) with the score tied 1-1. It's the third straight quality start for Irvin, but he hasn't gotten a decision in any of them, and his last win came back on July 21. In six outings since, he sports a 3.15 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 34.1 innings. Irvin will try to get back in the win column in his next start, a potential rematch with the Marlins back in Washington next weekend.

Irvin came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 12-3 loss to the Phillies, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie right-hander delivered his best performance yet in the majors and left the mound in line for his fourth win, but the Nationals' bullpen completely fell apart over the final three frames. Irvin generated 33 called or swinging strikes among his 94 pitches as he produced his second straight quality start and sixth of the year, and he'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Miami.

Irvin did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings in a 3-2 win over the Athletics. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
Though the Nationals are planning on monitoring Irvin's workload for the remainder of the season, he threw 99 pitches across 6.2 frames Saturday. He only surrendered a pair of runs, but both came on long balls as JJ Bleday and Brent Rooker each tagged Irvin for solo homers. Irvin has now allowed a home run in eight of his last nine starts and has served up multiple long balls in four of his last five outings. Despite his power troubles, Irvin owns a palatable 4.76 ERA across 90.2 innings with a 74:36 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to take on the Phillies for his next start.

Irvin will have his workload managed for the remainder of the season as the Nationals deploy a six-man rotation, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 26-year-old right-hander has thrown 106.1 innings between Triple-A and the majors this season, which already tops the 103.1 frames Irvin worked the year before in his return from Tommy John surgery in October 2020. Shifting to a six-man rotation will cost the Nats' regular starters a turn or two over the remainder of the season, and if younger arms like Irvin or MacKenzie Gore show serious signs of fatigue in August, the team could re-evaluate the situation when rosters expand in September. Irvin has a 5.20 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 36.1 innings since the beginning of July.
