Cubs re-signed 3B Ian Stewart to a one-year, $2 million contract. Stewart could earn an additional $500,000 with incentives. He's guaranteed a little less than what he figured to make in arbitration, but he could earn a little more if he reaches his incentives. It's a pretty fair deal all around and a risk the Cubs can afford to take.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that Ian Stewart has re-signed with the Cubs. No word yet on the terms involved. Stewart was non-tendered by the Cubs last week, but both sides were unable to find better fits elsewhere. The 27-year-old batted just .201/.292/.335 in 55 games this past season prior to undergoing wrist surgery, but he was recently given a clean bill of health. The Cubs' top alternative at third base was Luis Valbuena, so it's worth giving him another shot at a possible rebound.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Ian Stewart has drawn "wide interest" from teams looking for third base help. Stewart was on-tendered by the Cubs last week after batting just .201/.292/.335 in 55 games this past season while dealing with a wrist injury which eventually required surgery. The 27-year-old was recently given a clean bill of health, so plenty of teams appear willing to take a chance on him.

Cubs non-tendered 3B Ian Stewart. Stewart struggled mightily in his first season in Chicago, hitting a meager .201/.292/.335 in 55 games before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery. Still just 27-years-old, he should find a another team willing to gamble on his power upside.

Cubs activated 3B Ian Stewart from the 60-day disabled list. Stewart was limited to 55 games last season due to wrist surgery. The 27-year-old is under team control through 2014, but remains a non-tender candidate after batting just .201/.292/.335 in his first year with the Cubs.

Whether or not the Cubs bring back Ian Stewart (wrist) next season will depend largely on reports from their doctors. Stewart, who underwent surgery on his left wrist in June, was examined by doctors Tuesday in order to check on his progress. "Obviously, we'll spend a lot of time getting to the bottom of how it looks going forward before making a decision on his future with us," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "It is a year that's hard to evaluate given the wrist." Stewart is under team control for two more years but is an obvious non-tender candidate after batting just .201/.292/.335 in his first year in Chicago.

Ian Stewart needs surgery on his left wrist and is expected to be sidelined for 6-10 weeks. In other words, he's likely done for the remainder of the 2012 season. Stewart struggled mightily in 55 games this year for the Cubs, batting just .201/.292/.335 with five home runs and 17 RBI. He'll be eligible for arbitration heading into 2013.

ESPN Chicago reports Ian Stewart is "likely headed toward wrist surgery." Stewart has been on the disabled list since June 14 with left wrist soreness, and hasn't responded to a series of cortisone injections."We're probably going to have to make that decision (on surgery) pretty soon just for the fact that there is no progress going on," manager Dale Sveum said. In Stewart's latest examination, calcium deposits were found that might be affecting a nerve, but the issue has been ongoing for over a year without doctors finding anything specific to treat. The Cubs will likely provide an update on his status early next week.

Ian Stewart (wrist) was able to do some hitting Monday. Stewart is making progress, but there's still no timetable for his return. He's been out since mid-June due to his nagging left wrist injury.

Ian Stewart (wrist) said the specialist he saw in Cleveland this week diagnosed him with a possible impingement between bones in his left hand. The specialist also saw signs of an old compression injury that has healed on its own, which could be the source of the discomfort and occasional tingling Stewart has dealt with in his wrist for over a year. Surgery doesn't appear to be an option, though, as the Cubs are hoping Stewart is better after receiving a cortisone shot. If the shot works, he could return from the DL on June 29 when first eligible. He'll test out the wrist by hitting off a tee Saturday or Sunday.
