Gattis was given the nod as the team's designated hitter in the first two games of the series, but he'll head to the bench as manager A.J. Hinch deploys Carlos Beltran in the DH slot against Doug Fister and the Red Sox. Gattis performed well in Games 1 and 2, going 3-for-6 with two doubles, two walks and an RBI. He figures to continue seeing a healthy amount of playing time if the Astros advance to the next round of the postseason.

Gattis draws the start out of the DH spot for Game 1 of the ALDS, while Carlos Beltran retreats to the bench. During his last seven starts, Gattis is hitting .258 with three doubles, one home run and eight RBI in 31 at-bats, and provides another right-handed bat to the Astros' order as the club goes up against southpaw Chris Sale.

Gattis is not in the lineup against the Rangers on Wednesday.

Gattis will spend Wednesday's matinee on the bench following five straight starts in the lineup. After missing a decent portion of time in the second half due to a wrist injury and concussion, manager A.J. Hinch has been trying to get Gattis as many at-bats as possible before the beginning of the playoffs. Brian McCann will set up behind the plate for Wednesday's affair, but Gattis could be right back in the starting nine for Thursday's series opener against Boston.

Gattis went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Monday's 11-3 win over the Rangers.

EDGE Analysis

Gattis, who missed 32 games due to injury during the second half of the season, is getting plenty of at-bats over the final days in an effort to get him on form for the playoffs. The backup catcher/sometimes DH has five hits in his last 16 at-bats and knocked in seven runs over his last three games.

Gattis went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer Saturday against the Angels.

EDGE Analysis

Gattis smashed his 12th homer of the season to break open a 1-0 game to help lead the Astros to a divisional victory. Although he's been a part-time player, he's been an excellent option in leagues that allow daily lineup changes, as his .264 batting average and .463 slugging percentage are extremely useful at the catcher position.

Gattis went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 5-2 win over the Mariners.

EDGE Analysis

Gattis, who started at catcher for the first time since Aug. 29, has been limited over the second half of the season due to a wrist injury and a concussion. He's been held to just 19 games and 68 at-bats since the All-Star break. Brian McCann will catch most of the games over the final two weeks of the season, but manager A.J. Hinch acknowledged to Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle a need to prepare Gattis for the postseason. "It's tough when you go into (the postseason), you want to have some routine and some rhythm," Hinch said. "I want to get Gattis' bat going. He's a force at the plate. I've got to get him back into the lineup to get his bat going. He hasn't had a ton of at-bats."

Gattis served as Houston's designated hitter Sunday, going 0-for-3 in a 10-2 loss to the Athletics.

EDGE Analysis

Gattis, who had missed 10 games due to the effects of a concussion, was activated Saturday but didn't appear in that day's doubleheader. With extra catchers on the roster during the month of September and Carlos Beltran's average hovering around .230, Gattis could get regular at-bats as the team's DH over the final weeks of the season.

Gattis could be back behind the plate for one of the Astros' contests Saturday, but the club may choose to ease his way back after playing a full game at the catching position for Low-A Quad Cities on Thursday. Gattis's wrist felt good enough for him to play a full game behind the plate at Low-A Quad Cities, even if he did wind up going hitless in the rehab appearance. It's unclear if Gattis will immediately return to Houston's lineup, but with the 40-man September roster, the club has the luxury to activate him even if he might need a few rest days in the next week or two.

The series is even at 1-1 with the decisive game scheduled Friday, giving Gattis at least one more opportunity to prepare for his return to Houston.
