The 38-year-old may very well have played his final game of 2014, though the team hasn't officially shut him down. Ortiz is dealing with inflammation in his wrist and the team will take all the necessary precautions, sine he said it feels similar to how he felt when he suffered a ligament tear in 2008.

Ortiz's wrist has become inflamed as a result of a check swing earlier in the week, and he said it feels similar to how he felt when he suffered a ligament tear in 2008. At this point, the Red Sox don't think his current injury is especially serious, but they will be cautious, putting Ortiz's availability for the weekend in question.

After missing two games due to family emergency, Ortiz will step back in Thursday to face right-hander Gerrit Cole in the finale against Pittsburgh. Ortiz has yet to face Cole, but is batting .255/.360/.486 against right-handed pitching this season and .279/.358/.552 overall since the All-Star break.
