The Padres recalled Paddack from High-A Lake Elsinore ahead of his scheduled start Saturday against the Pirates.

EDGE Analysis

Reliever Gerardo Reyes was optioned to Triple-A El Paso to clear a spot on the active roster for Paddack, who was shut down for the past week and a half while the Padres remain mindful of restricting his workload this season. Paddack may be subjected to further non-injury-related shutdowns later in the season, but he should remain a worthy starting option in just about every fantasy format when he's included in the Padres' pitching schedule. He had been scuffling prior to his assignment to Lake Elsinore, however, posting a 5.76 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over his last five starts for San Diego.

Paddack will be recalled from High-A Lake Elsinore to start Saturday at Pittsburgh, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

EDGE Analysis

Paddack was sent to High-A on June 12 with the Friars looking to manage his innings during his rookie campaign, and he'll make his return Saturday after spending the minimum 10 days in the minors. The 23-year-old has a 3.15 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 72:13 K:BB through 65.2 innings this season, but he struggled over his final three starts before being sent down with 13 runs allowed (12 earned) over 14.1 innings.

Paddack was optioned to High-A Lake Elsinore on Wednesday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Padres are looking to monitor the young right-hander's innings, so he'll head to the minors for the time being to rest for what is expected to be a short period of time before ultimately rejoining the Padres. It seems like a good time for a reset for Paddack, as he's allowed a combined 13 runs (12 earned) across 14.1 innings over his last three appearances. The Padres have yet to announce who will replace Paddack in the rotation at this point.
