Reds released INF Chris Nelson. Nelson was batting .274/.330/.363 with four home runs and 38 RBI through 63 games in Triple-A, but apparently the Reds weren't planning to call him up. The 28-year-old should latch on elsewhere soon.

A source tells MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo that Chris Nelson won't opt out of his minor league contract with the Reds. Nelson had an opt-out clause if he wasn't in the major leagues by May 6. The infielder is hitting .243/.316/.340 with Triple-A Louisville this season. He's got another opt-out option in 30 days.

Reds re-signed INF Chris Nelson to a minor league deal; assigned him to Triple-A Louisville. Nelson opted out at the end of March, hoping to join the bench of another big league club, but the market was dry. Nelson will serve as organizational depth for the Reds.

Chris Nelson opted out of his contract with the Reds and has requested his release. A non-roster invitee to Reds camp, Nelson hit .317/.348/.463 this spring but didn't do enough to make the club as a reserve infielder. He could get a look on the open market from a team looking for a bench bat.

Chris Nelson's two-run single in the second inning on Friday provided all of the offense that the Reds would need in a 2-1 victory over the Rangers. The 28-year-old is enjoying a nice start to Cactus League play, hitting .304 (7-for-23) with five RBI. With Jack Hannahan looking uncertain for Opening Day, there's a chance that Nelson could break camp with the big club.

Reds signed Chris Nelson to a minor league contract. The deal comes with an invite to big league camp. "I think it's a great opportunity, especially being in the National League," Nelson told MLB.com. "I have a chance to be a utility man, and with the double-switches there could be a chance for playing time. It could be a good fit for me." Bouncing between the Rockies, Yankees and Angels last season, Nelson slashed a disappointing .227/.273/.327. Cincinnati's infield would have to be ravaged by injuries for Nelson to have a chance at mixed league relevancy next year.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Reds are close to a contract agreement with free agent infielder Chris Nelson. It's likely a minor league deal. Nelson spent a nomadic 2013 season between the Rockies, Yankees and Angels' organizations, slashing .227/.273/.327 at the big league level. The 28-year-old is a career .268/.312/.399 hitter who can handle either second or third base at a subpar level.

Angels non-tendered 3B Chris Nelson. Nelson was in his first year of arbitration, but the Angels decided he didn't warrant a notable raise after batting .227/.273/.327 at the big league level in 2013. He'll have no trouble catching on as a utility player somewhere.
