Capps (elbow) is working on his mechanics in Arizona at extended spring training and may require an extension on his rehab stint, A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Capps gave up five runs and was able to record just two outs on Thursday for Triple-A El Paso. Whether this ineffectiveness is due to his elbow flaring up or just his struggles to repeat his mechanics is unclear. He was previously expected to return mid-May, but after this news, his return could be delayed a week or two.

Capps (elbow) allowed five runs on three hits on two walks while recording only two outs Thursday during a rehab appearance for Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Capps allowed four runs in one of his other rehab outings, so he hasn't exactly proven ready for big-league action. The right-hander had entered the season as a popular speculative closer, but Brandon Maurer (3.12 ERA, 12 strikeouts and one walk in 8.2 innings, plus 4-for-4 on save chances) has held down the closer picture. Capps can remain stashed on fantasy disabled list roster spots, but whenever he returns, it may take longer than expected for him to return to high-leverage innings, let alone knock Maurer off the saves throne.

Capps (elbow) tossed a scoreless inning Tuesday for Triple-A El Paso, his fourth rehab start.
EDGE Analysis
The appearance went much better than his previous outing, when he was shelled for four earned runs in just 0.2 innings of work. Capps needed just ten pitches Tuesday to retire the side, so it appears he's adjusting to live action rather nicely. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2016, the young reliever could be ready for his return to the big leagues within the next week or so.

Capps (elbow) threw a rehab outing at Triple-A El Paso on Sunday and allowed three runs in less than an inning of work, Bill Center of Padres.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Although Capps' health has improved since undergoing Tommy John surgery, Sunday's outing would suggest that he's still adjusting to live pitching. Capps has shown the ability to be a solid bullpen arm, as he posted a 1.16 ERA and 0.81 WHIP over 30 games when he was last healthy 2015. The Padres could opt to have him pitch a couple more rehab games, but a return to the big leagues may not be too far off.

Capps (elbow) threw another scoreless inning for High-A Lake Elsinore Thursday. He walked one and struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
While the stat line was nearly identical to his first rehab outing, the dominant reliever struggled with his control in this one, only throwing nine of his 18 pitches for strikes. Capps will look to tighten that up in his next rehab outing, but all signs are pointing towards a return to the majors soon. The 26-year-old has the dominating arsenal to become an elite back-end reliever, but he will have to prove that he is back at full strength after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2016. Fantasy owners speculating on future saves could take a flyer Capps, but those in holds leagues should scoop him up immediately if he is available on the waiver wire.

Capps (elbow) threw a scoreless inning in a rehab start for Single-A Advanced Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Capps needed just 11 pitches to complete the inning, his first live game action since spring training. The next step for the right-hander will be a rehab appearance out of the bullpen, though it remains to be seen where and when that opportunity will come. Regardless, it appears the Padres will have their dangerous young arm back in the majors shortly.

Capps (elbow) tossed a 21-pitch simulated inning Tuesday, MLB.com's AJ Cassavell reports.
EDGE Analysis
Capps tacked on a bullpen session in addition to his simulated inning Tuesday. The 26-year-old hopes to begin rehab starts in the minors following one more simulated inning. Although he has not pitched since 2015, Capps would like to improve on his lifetime 3.99 ERA that spans 118 appearances over four seasons.

Capps will begin the season on the 10-day disabled list, Bill Center of Padres.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Capps was always expected to open the year on the DL, the Padres just made it official Saturday. After only recording one out in his first spring appearance, the 26-year-old looked much sharper in his second outing of spring, striking out two and walking one in a scoreless frame. He appears to be nearing closer to an official return from Tommy John surgery, but the Padres will continue to ease him back into things.

Capps (elbow) will start the season on the disabled list.
EDGE Analysis
Capps is nearing an official return from Tommy John surgery, but the Padres are continuing to proceed with precaution. The 26-year-old is scheduled to pitch his second game of spring on Thursday, and if all goes well, there should be a clearer indication of when he'll be ready to return and challenge Brandon Maurer for the closer role.

Capps is nearing an official return from Tommy John surgery but is still expected to begin the season on the disabled list, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Capps made his first game appearance of the spring Monday, but it seems that the Padres don't want to cut him completely loose just yet. This is likely just a precaution as opposed to a sign that anything is wrong, so the right-hander should be ready to challenge Brandon Maurer for the closer role fairly soon despite the delayed start to the season.
