Smith and the Diamondbacks agreed to a one-year, $1.465 million contract Friday, avoiding arbitration, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
A battle with COVID-19 limited Smith to just 14 innings last season on either side of a trade from the Marlins. His 2.57 ERA in those innings looks quite good, but it came with a poor 15:12 K:BB. The sample size is too small to significant alter Smith's reputation in either direction heading into 2021.

Smith allowed a hit and three walks over four scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Tuesday. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
Smith threw 44-of-78 pitches for strikes in his longest start of the year, but he wasn't eligible for the win. He's amassed a 3.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 12 innings between the Diamondbacks and the Marlins this year. The 29-year-old Smith could get one more start this season versus the Rockies on Sunday, but it's unlikely he'd see more than the four innings he worked Tuesday.

Smith didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's contest between the Angels and the Diamondbacks. He gave up two runs on three hits and two walks while fanning four across two innings.
EDGE Analysis
Smith has made three starts this season and hasn't pitched more than three innings in any of those outings, so it's safe to consider him as an "opener" rather than a regular starter. As such, his upside going forward shouldn't be very high due to his inability to pitch deep into games.

Smith took a no-decision during Friday's win against the Mariners, allowing one run on one hit and a walk while striking out three across three innings.
EDGE Analysis
Smith's only damage of the night came via a solo home run by Dylan Moore in the third inning. Otherwise the southpaw held the Mariners in check, despite getting lifted after the third inning and throwing 29-of-40 pitches for strikes. Smith, who was activated from the injured list ahead of Friday's contest, made only one start this season that also lasted three innings before he was impacted by the Marlins' coronavirus outbreak. The 29-year-old will gear up for his next start Wednesday at Angel Stadium.

Smith (COVID-19) was activated from the injured list Friday ahead of his scheduled start against Seattle.
EDGE Analysis
Smith made just a single start this year before being sidelined as part of the Marlins' early-season coronavirus outbreak. He remained on the injured list after joining the Diamondbacks in a deadline-day trade. He should have the opportunity to pitch fairly deep into this contest, however, as he threw 70 pitches in an intrasquad game Saturday.

Smith (COVID-19) will start Friday's game against the Mariners, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will make his first start in over a month after working his way back from a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. The southpaw threw 70 pitches in an intrasquad game, so he should be well-rested and able to handle a heavy workload in his debut with the Diamondbacks.

Smith (COVID-19) is scheduled to throw 70 pitches in an intrasquad game Saturday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith, recently acquired from the Marlins, appears to be nearing a return. The Diamondbacks will see how the left-hander responds to the outing before deciding next steps.

Smith (COVID-19) was traded from the Marlins to the Diamondbacks on Monday along with Humberto Mejia and a player to be named later, with Starling Marte going the other way, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith made just a single start this season before being caught up in the Marlins' COVID-19 outbreak. He's been cleared to throw since mid-August, however, and appears to be quite close to being ready to return. The lefty produced a passable 4.41 ERA over the previous two seasons, with a 26.3 percent strikeout rate generally being offset by a 9.6 percent walk rate and a 26.9 percent groundball rate.

Smith (COVID-19) won't be activated from the injured list to start either Tuesday or Wednesday against the Blue Jays, Andre Fernandez of Sirius XM Radio reports.
EDGE Analysis
Though Smith appears ready to return from the IL after having had the past two weeks to build up his arm at the Marlins' alternate training site, Miami isn't quite ready to integrate the southpaw back into the rotation just yet. According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, Smith could be a sought-after arm ahead of Monday's trade deadline after two of the top available starters in Mike Clevinger and Mike Minor went off the board, which may provide a possible explanation for why Miami hasn't chosen to add him back to their pitching schedule just yet. Instead, Elieser Hernandez and Sixto Sanchez will draw starts Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, leaving the Marlins' weekend series in Tampa Bay as the next potential target for when Smith might pitch, assuming he's still with the organization.

Smith (illness) lines up to return to the Marlins' rotation early next week against the Blue Jays, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Miami has a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday of next week at home against Toronto, and Mish reports that Smith's current throwing schedule would line up for his activation for one of those starts. That is not locked in just yet, as Smith will throw again this week as he continues to build up after missing over a month due to COVID-19.
