Smith (4-8) won Thursday's 12-3 win against the Padres, allowing an unearned run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts across 5.1 innings.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was saddled with the bulk role of following opener Matt Peacock after scheduled starter Taylor Widener was scratched and delivered one of his best outings of the season. It was these same Padres who bounced Smith to the bullpen following his August 6 start, and the possibility that he could reenter the rotation due to the Widener injury exists.

Manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Smith will exit Arizona's starting rotation and will return to the bullpen, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
The left-hander surrendered five runs in each of his past three starts, and covered less than two frames in the past two, costing him his spot in the starting rotation. Smith began the season in the rotation but was moved to the bullpen after a poor debut, and he'll transition to a relief role once again. The Diamondbacks have yet to decide who will fill the rotation spot, which will come up Thursday versus the Padres.

Smith allowed five runs on three hits and six walks over 1.1 innings in a no-decision against the Padres on Friday. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
The left-hander's inability to find the strike zone appeared to bury Arizona early, though the Diamondbacks were able to mount an improbable comeback to take Smith off the hook for a loss. Still, his dramatic lack of control has become a glaring issue, as Smith threw only 26 of 61 pitches for strikes and issued a season-high six free passes. Over his past two starts, the 30-year-old has handed out a combined 11 walks across three innings, resulting in 10 earned runs. Smith is scheduled to make his next start at home against San Diego next week, but there may be some discussion about the need for a reset after the pair of disastrous outings.

Smith (3-8) lost Sunday's 13-0 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing five runs on three hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
EDGE Analysis
Smith got through the first inning having thrown 28 pitches after walking two but encountered serious trouble in the second. The left-hander loaded the bases with none out, retired two, then surrendered a walk and two hits that plated five Dodger runs before being removed having tossed 70 baseballs. Smith has now lost six of his last seven starts and seen his ERA climb from 3.21 to 5.04 during the slump.

Smith (3-7) allowed five runs on three hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings, picking up the loss to the Cubs on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
All three hits allowed were home runs, which shouldn't come as a surprise, as the left-hander has served up 13 homers in 54 innings as a starter in 2021. Saturday's outing was essentially a microcosm of his career as a starter: he misses bats, walks too many, and gives up long balls. Since rejoining the rotation early June, Smith is 1-6 with a 5.67 ERA, 10.6 K/9, 4.9 BB/9 and 2.2 HR/9 over 46 innings, spanning nine starts. He's next lined up to pitch Sunday at home against the Dodgers.

Smith (3-6) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.2 innings to earn the win over the Pirates on Monday. He also stole a base after reaching on a fielder's choice.
EDGE Analysis
The last time Smith pitched, the Dodgers rocked him for nine runs in one-plus inning, but the left-hander was much better Monday. He befuddled Pittsburgh hitters with his changeup for six innings before the Pirates scratched out a couple of runs in the seventh. The Diamondbacks managed to hold on for Smith's first win since he rejoined the rotation June 1. His next turn through the rotation is scheduled for Sunday on the road against the Cubs.

Smith (2-5) lost Saturday's 22-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing nine runs on six hits and three walks with one strikeout in one inning.
EDGE Analysis
Smith struggled mightily in this one as he surrendered three home runs in one plus innings and was removed following a Justin Turner grand slam in the second. It was the lefties fourth consecutive loss and Arizona has lost seven straight starts by Smith.

Smith (2-4) lost Sunday's 5-2 game against the Giants, permitting five runs on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts across six innings.
EDGE Analysis
Smith breezed through the bottom of the San Francisco order in the second, fourth and fifth innings but was tagged for five combined runs in first, third and sixth as Austin Slater, Buster Posey and Darin Ruf went a combined 5-for-9 with two home runs and all five runs and RBI. The loss was the lefty's third straight and Smith hasn't won a game since April, though his 3.45 ERA shows he's pitched better than his record indicates.

Smith (2-4) took the loss against St. Louis on Tuesday, hurling five innings and allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight.
EDGE Analysis
The outing was largely a battle for the right-hander, who needed 98 pitches to make it through five frames. He allowed at least one baserunner in each of his innings and also committed an error. Still, Smith nearly made it through the appearance without giving up a run -- he held the Cardinals scoreless through 4.2 frames before Nolan Arenado slugged a two-run homer to plate the first runs of the contest for either team. Smith has been effective since moving back into the starting rotation June 1, registering a 2.87 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 10.1 K/9 across six starts. However, he has an 0-3 record to show for it, and he has struggled with his control, notching a 4.9 K/9 over that span. He's tentatively lined up to make his next start at home versus San Francisco on Sunday.

Smith (2-3) allowed a run on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss versus Milwaukee on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
This was a hard-luck loss for Smith, who only gave up an RBI single to opposing pitcher Brandon Woodruff in the fifth inning. Milwaukee added a pair of runs off reliever Noe Ramirez in the seventh. Smith has been solid with a 3.03 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 67:30 K:BB across 59.1 innings this year. The southpaw is projected to make his next start in St. Louis next week.
