Quantrill gave up six runs on six hits over 2.2 innings with three strikeouts in Saturday's spring training loss to the White Sox. He's given up 12 earned runs in 11 innings (9.82 ERA) this spring. However, manager Terry Francona downplayed his struggles. "This kid is going to be fine," Francona told MLB.com.
EDGE Analysis
Quantrill is battling Logan Allen for the fifth starter role and at least statistically he's falling far behind. Quantrill has nine walks and nine strikeouts in 11 innings as well. Allen has a 1.00 ERA (1 ER in 9 IP) this spring. Francona's comments appear to say the race is closer than the numbers, but it's hard to feel confident about Quantrill making the rotation at this point. Still, the Indians may not make a decision until the final week of spring training.

Quantrill gave up three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one in three innings in his most recent Cactus League appearance against the Angels.
EDGE Analysis
He was scoreless over two frames in his first outing of the spring, but has given up multiple runs in each of his most recent appearances, during which he has been piggybacking with Triston McKenzie. Cleveland has been keeping its cards close to the vest thus far regarding how the rotation will shake out behind its top three starters, but the general assumption is that McKenzie will be the No. 4 starter while Quantrill and Logan Allen vie for the final spot. Allen has had better results in their respective tiny samples this spring, while Quantrill has a more impressive track record dating back to previous seasons.

Quantrill gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out two over three innings in a no-decision versus the Pirates on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Quantrill saw the most work out of the eight pitchers Cleveland used Sunday. The 25-year-old righty has amassed a 2.25 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 31:8 K:BB across 32 innings between Cleveland and San Diego in 2020. Quantrill figures to work out of the bullpen during the playoffs.

Quantrill will start Sunday's game against the Pirates, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old delivered four scoreless innings Tuesday in his first start since joining Cleveland, and he'll close out the regular season on the mound for his new team. Quantrill needed only 38 pitches during his previous outing and is unlikely to pitch as deep into Sunday's game, especially with the Indians also wanting to give most of their relievers some work. The right-hander has a 2.17 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB across 29 innings this season.

Quantrill didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 5-3 extra-inning win over the White Sox, giving up only one hit and one walk over four scoreless innings. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Cleveland went with a bullpen game Tuesday, but the ultra-efficient Quantrill nearly qualified for a win on only 38 pitches (26 strikes) before handing things off to Adam Plutko. Quantrill has been sharp since being acquired from the Padres, posting a 1.54 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB in 11.2 innings over seven appearances, and he could be positioning himself for a chance to win a rotation spot in 2021.

Quantrill will serve as the opener for Tuesday's game against the White Sox, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
Quantrill figures to work only the first inning or two, considering he hasn't worked more than two frames since Aug. 15 against Arizona. Shane Bieber will have his start moved to Wednesday as a result.

Quantrill was traded from San Diego to Cleveland on Monday as part of the package for Mike Clevinger, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Quantrill was at least a fairly interesting prospect, but he didn't have a spot in the Padres' rotation and certainly wouldn't after the acquisition of Clevinger. In 120.1 career innings at the big-league level, which includes 19 starts and 14 relief appearances, he owns a 4.79 ERA and a 4.23 FIP, striking out a modest 20.7 percent of opposing batters while walking 6.6 percent. Whether or not he'll immediately enter the rotation for his new team is unclear.

Quantrill won't start Friday's game against the Astros and will be available out of the bullpen this weekend, 97.3 The Fan reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old allowed one run over 3.2 innings during his start last Saturday, but he was twice utilized out of the bullpen this week to record one out -- including his first career save -- and he will continue to be deployed as a reliever. Manager Jayce Tingler said the team values Quantrill's versatility and trusts him in pretty much any spot, so it appears his role will shift as necessary throughout the season. Tingler also indicated the right-hander could make another start if he doesn't make a relief appearance within the next couple days.

Quantrill retired the only batter he faced via a flyball to record the save Tuesday at Texas.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old started Saturday's game and covered 3.2 innings, so it was a bit surprising to see him warming up in the ninth inning Tuesday with the Friars leading 6-4. Quantrill had no issues and needed only four pitches, so he could still make his next turn through the rotation Friday.

Quantrill didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's contest between the Padres and the Diamondbacks. He allowed one run on five hits and one walk while fanning five across 3.2 innings.
EDGE Analysis
Quantrill's first start of the season was a short-lived appearance, perhaps as expected considering he had come out of the bullpen in his three previous appearances, but he got the job done and kept his team in the game before departing with one out to go in the fourth inning. Quantrill has been effective with a 2.92 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP in 12.1 innings this season, but he is expected to return to the bullpen soon.
