Flynn has worked to a 3.04 ERA in the minors as both a starter and a reliever, but he figures to be deployed out of the bullpen with the big league club. He may ride the shuttle fairly regularly throughout the season.

He should get a chance to compete for the fifth starter's job during spring training unless the Royals sign someone to fill the spot during the offseason.

The Marlins were forced to turn to Flynn on Thursday with Jarred Cosart (oblique) unable to go, and Flynn gave up five runs on eight hits in just four innings to take the loss to Pittsburgh. He'll head back down Friday, suggesting Cosart may not miss another turn, though the team has yet to confirm.

Flynn made four starts with the big club last year, and really struggled, so he's not off to a good start this time around.
