Brandon McCarthy (head) has been released from the intensive care unit at Summit Hospital in Oakland. McCarthy had surgery Wednesday after a CT scan revealed an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture, and is reportedly making progress in his recovery. We should have an update on his status later this week.

Athletics trainer Nick Paparesta said Brandon McCarthy (head) could be moved out of the critical care unit to a transitional unit soon at Summit Hospital in Oakland. Great news. McCarthy had surgery Wednesday to relieve pressure on his brain, but he's already feeling much better, as the popular Tweeter was back online Friday dropping lines from Arrested Development. He won't return this season, but obviously that's secondary to his health, which is on the upswing.

Athletics trainer Nick Paparesta said Friday that Brandon McCarthy (head) is still "absolutely" in a life-threatening situation. McCarthy required surgery for an epidural hematoma after he was hit in the head by a line drive during his start on Wedneasday. The early signs are promising, but the second and third days after surgery are important. He's currently in day two. "We will stay cautiously optimistic at this stage," said Paparesta. "The fact that he was able to get up, sit up, feed himself, those are obviously great signs. Hopefully, he can have full function."

Brandon McCarthy underwent surgery after being hit in the head by a line drive on Wednesday. Very scary. The surgery was deemed necessary after a CT scan revealed an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture. McCarthy had another scan Thursday which showed improvement from his previous scan while the epidural hemorrhage has subsided. Per a statement from A's general manager Billy Beane, McCarthy is "stable, awake and alert" and currently resting in the critical care unit of the hospital. His status as a baseball player is secondary at a time like this.

Brandon McCarthy (head) is "conscious and doing well" at Summit Hospital in Oakland, according to the Athletics' official Twitter page. Doctors want the right-hander to stay overnight for further observation and he will not travel with the A's on the charter flight to Seattle Thursday afternoon. McCarthy received a CT scan, but results of the exam are not yet known. The righty had to exit Wednesday's start after taking an Erick Aybar line drive off his head.

Brandon McCarthy (head) is receiving a CT scan at an Oakland-area hospital. The results are not yet known. McCarthy had to exit Wednesday's start after taking an Erick Aybar line drive off his head. He never lost consciousness, but it's possible he suffered a concussion or some other trauma. The A's should have an update on his status later Wednesday.

Brandon McCarthy yielded two runs over seven innings in a 4-2 win over the Rays. Nice to see after he was knocked around for six runs over 3 1/3 innings last time out. McCarthy held the Rays to just four hits (including a home run) while fanning seven, walking two and hitting a batter. He'll carry a 3.12 ERA into a start against the Red Sox next week.

Brandon McCarthy was pounded for six runs in 3 1/3 innings by the Twins on Monday. Well, perhaps pounded was the wrong word, considering that nine of the 10 hits he allowed were singles. Still, he had just one clean frame in the game, and he actually walked in a run in the first. It qualifies as his worst start in over a year.

Brandon McCarthy will start Wednesday against the Royals. The A's wanted to make sure McCarthy got through a bullpen session Sunday OK before clearing him for his next start. The right-hander's shoulder is likely to be touch and go for the rest of the season, but he should be in fantasy lineups when he's able to take the mound.

Athletics activated RHP Brandon McCarthy from the 15-day disabled list. McCarthy will return to start Friday night against the White Sox. The veteran right-hander has been sidelined since June 19 due to a strained right shoulder. He returns to an outstanding 2.54 ERA and 52/19 K/BB ratio through 12 starts this season.
