The Nationals reassigned Young to minor-league camp Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Young was among the 10 players sent to minor-league camp during Washington's first wave of spring cuts. The Nationals selected Young in the minor-league Rule 5 draft earlier this offseason after Arizona outrighted him off its 40-man roster in late November. He saw action in 58 games for the Diamondbacks in 2021, hitting .209 with six home runs and 15 RBI across 104 plate appearances.

Young was outrighted to Double-A Amarillo on Tuesday.

Young finished the 2021 campaign in the minors and won't stick on the 40-man roster through the offseason. He had a decent showing in his first extended look in the big leagues with a .782 OPS in 104 plate appearances.

Young was optioned to Triple-A Reno after Friday's game against the Astros.

Young has shuttled between the majors and Triple-A throughout the season. Though he's managed a .484 slugging percentage across 104 plate appearances, he's also struck out at a 43 percent clip while with Arizona. Luis Frias was recalled to make his major-league debut in the corresponding move.

Young remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers.

Young closed the weekend with three consecutive starts at second base, with the 27-year-old going 3-for-10 with three doubles, a walk, two runs and an RBI over that stretch. Despite the solid showing over the weekend, Young still looks like he'll be in store for little more than a part-time role in September. He'll be on the bench for the second straight day Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks recalled Young from Triple-A Reno on Sunday. He'll start at second base and bat sixth in Arizona's series finale in Philadelphia.

EDGE Analysis

Arizona released No. 3 catcher Bryan Holaday to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster for Young. Though he'll be included in the lineup in his return to Arizona, the righty-hitting Young isn't expected to fill anything more than a short-side platoon role in the infield over the final month of the season.

Young was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Young hasn't filled a regular role for the Diamondbacks this season, though he does own a strong .924 OPS in a small sample of 67 plate appearances. He owns a 49.3 percent strikeout rate, however, so it's no surprise that he hasn't earned more opportunities. Ketel Marte (hamstring) was activated off the injured list in a corresponding move.

Young hit a two-run pinch-hit home run Saturday against the Cubs.

Young entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning and delivered a home run to give the Diamondbacks insurance on their lead. He now has six homers on the season but has served nearly exclusively as a pinch-hitter during his time in the majors. In 58 plate appearances, Young has maintained a .224/.345/.653 line but is also striking out at 46.6 percent rate.

Young went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a strikeout in a 22-1 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

Young entered in the fifth and homered in the eighth to give Arizona some dignity with their only run of the game. The second baseman has gone back and forth between Arizona and Reno all season but is slashing an impressive .233/.353/.651 in 35 games, mostly off the bench.

Young was recalled from Triple-A Reno prior to Saturday's game against the Dodgers.

EDGE Analysis

Young will rejoin the big club just two days after being sent back to Reno. He is not in the starting lineup Saturday against Los Angeles and he figures to resume serving in a reserve utility role going forward.
