The 2017 season has been a challenge for Bregman who continually adjusts as pitchers develop a plan for him. As such, his batting average has fluctuated between .245 and .265 since mid April. However, the young third baseman has made more of an impact with his bat since the middle of May. Bregman was homer-less with eight RBI and a .716 OPS over the first 35 games. Since then, he's slugged eight home runs with 18 RBI and an .820 OPS over 36 games.

Bregman has seen the highest percentage of sliders of any player this season, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

EDGE Analysis

All young hitters go through a period of adjustment, as opponents develop a book on them. Bregman is trying to be more patient and drive balls to right-center field gap. Returns on his adjustments have been on display during the current series in Oakland. The 23-year-old third baseman is 5-for-9 with four doubles and three walks, improving his seasonal line to .256/.338/.415 over 267 plate appearances.

Bregman is not in the lineup Saturday against the Red Sox.

Bregman is slashing just .154/.298/.231 in June, so he'll head to the bench to clear his head as Marwin Gonzalez takes over at the hot corner. The youngster could start to lose more at-bats to the hot-hitting Gonzalez if he doesn't turn things around.

With 12 home runs and a .401 on-base percentage on the season, Marwin Gonzalez is making it increasingly difficult for manager A.J. Hinch to justify keeping him out of the lineup, especially while Bregman (.171 average in June) continues to languish. Gonzalez's ability to play all over the diamond and in the outfield means that he won't steal at-bats exclusively from Bregman, but the young third baseman's ongoing struggles make him one of the more vulnerable players.

Bregman finished 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI against the Angels on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

After homering in each of the final three days of May, Bregman had not put one over the fence in June until Friday. It hasn't been easy for Bregman this season, so he likely needs any confidence he can build from positive results. However, it does not seem, at least right now, that a significant amount of his playing time is in jeopardy.

Bregman looked as though he had righted the ship after a trio of two-hit performances during the Astros' series sweep of the Twins, but he backslid over the weekend against the Rangers, going 0-for-10 over the three games. Astros manager A.J. Hinch will give Bregman Monday's game off to refocus, allowing Marwin Gonzalez to pick up another start at the hot corner.

Bregman went 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 17-6 rout of the Twins.

He's now homered in three straight games, and all six of his long balls on the season have come since May 14. Bregman has a very slow start to the year at the plate, but fantasy GMs who were patient with him -- or who took a chance on him while he was struggling -- are now beginning to reap the rewards.

That doesn't exactly qualify as a breakout, but Bregman is slowly pulling up his stats after a stone-cold start. It took him a while to warm up to major-league pitching last year, too, so don't be surprised if he suddenly goes on a tear now that he's starting to feel good at the plate.

Bregman sports a respectable .254 batting average, but Monday's homer was just his 15th extra-base hit of the season and improved his slugging percentage to a disappointing .393. Additionally, this was just his fourth multi-hit game in May. It's probably wise to remain patient with the youngster, though. Bergman owns oodles of upside and is a mainstay in a dangerous lineup.

Bregman seems to have broken out of his season-long power outage with three homers and three doubles in the last two weeks, but he's still been unable to make up much ground with his batting average, which sits at a disappointing .250 for the campaign. After going 1-for-11 with five strikeouts over his previous three games, Bregman will hit the bench for the day game after the night game, allowing Marwin Gonzalez to pick up a start at the hot corner.
