However, it would spiral from there, as he allowed three runs in the second and another four in the third while recording just one out. He managed to avoid a loss as the A's rallied to tie the game 7-7. Oller has a 9.00 ERA with 8:6 K:B in 12 innings this year.

Oller will be the starting pitcher Thursday against the Orioles, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Oller will get the ball for his first start of the 2023 season. The right-hander was a member of the Oakland rotation for 14 starts in 2023 and struggled to a 6.30 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over 74.1 innings of work. Oller likely won't be able to work deep into the contest, and his lack of success at the highest level makes him a poor option for this or any other start he'll make.

Oller had been in contention with JP Sears for the final spot in the rotation to open the season, and based on the former's deployment out of the bullpen Saturday, it seems evident he lost out on the competition. Nevertheless, Oller essentially put in a starting pitcher's workload thanks to Shintaro Fujinami's nightmarish MLB debut that saw him get chased after just 2.1 innings. Oller gave up his fair share of runs as well, but he was able to gobble up some key innings and preserve the arms of several bullpen mates. He'll likely remain ticketed for multi-inning, low-leverage relief assignments for the time being.

He's expected to be ready for the start of the season after being scratched Saturday because of symptoms of vertigo.

The right-hander slogged through a 36-pitch opening frame during which he allowed RBI singles to Carlos Santana and Sam Haggerty that drove home three total runs. Oller's rocky outing was a shorter version of his last start before going on the IL, when he'd yielded six runs on eight hits, including four home runs, to the Orioles. It remains to be seen if Oller will get a chance to make at least one more appearance during the final days of the regular season and head into the offseason with some momentum.
