Don't look now, but DeAngelo currently sits tied for third in scoring among NHL defensemen with 13 points in 13 games. Many eyebrows were raised when the Canes added him as a free agent last summer after he was bought out by the Rangers for behavioural issues, but adding him to the roster now appears to be a brilliant move. DeAngelo deserves to be in your fantasy lineup at every opportunity.

He scored on a sharp one-timer from the point that appeared to ricochet of players in front of Jeremy Swayman. It was the first goal by a Canes' defender this season. DeAngelo appears to have put his abysmal 2020-21 behind him and he's back to the elite form that he showed in 2019-20 (53 points in 68 games). The defender has five points in six games.

DeAngelo has a pair of power-play assists after his first two games as a Hurricane.

EDGE Analysis

DeAngelo is currently skating on the third pairing opposite Ian Cole, averaging just 15:56 in ice time. However, 5:06 of that has been on the power play, which is where the 25-year-old blueliner has shown some success in the past (19 PP points in 68 games two seasons ago with the Rangers). It's early, but at this point he's worth a flyer in most standard fantasy formats.

DeAngelo signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Hurricanes on Wednesday.

EDGE Analysis

DeAngelo was waived by the Rangers in February following a postgame altercation with a teammate and the final season of his two-year, $9.6 million contract was subsequently bought out by New York. His signing with the Hurricanes will no doubt come with some controversy, but Carolina clearly thinks his impressive offensive upside is worth the gamble. The 2014 first-round pick has racked up 19 goals and 84 points in 135 games over the past three campaigns.

EDGE Analysis

DeAngelo has talent, but he remains a challenging fit in any dressing room. No doubt teams will be interested in him if they can get him at or near the league minimum. It was only two seasons ago that DeAngelo put up 53 points in 68 games and was one of the most productive defenders in the NHL.
