GM Ken Holland said on Sunday that there will likely be an update on forward Todd Bertuzzi's ailing back Monday. Bertuzzi missed both weekend games with the back injury. He has had plenty of problems in the past with his wonky back and at age 38, time is not on his side. Bertuzzi has two goals and three points in seven games thus far. Reserve him for now if he is in your lineup.

The Red Wings will be without veteran Todd Bertuzzi for the two weekend games because of his ailing back. With Bertuzzi out, the Red Wings recalled forward Joakim Andersson from Grand Rapids. Andersson (6-foot-2, 205 pounds), 24, provides the Red Wings with Bertuzzi-like size and a grinding game, which could prove critical with the big and physical Stanley Cup champion Kings in town Sunday. "Andersson is having a good season (10 goals, 17 assists), has size, he's good defensively, and this is a good opportunity to evaluate him," Detroit GM Ken Holland said. "We didn't want to wake up this weekend and need a body." Andersson (2008, fourth-round pick) played in five games with the Red Wings last season, going pointless. He had 21 goals and 30 assists last year with the Griffins. Coach Mike Babcock likely will move Daniel Cleary up to the second line to replace Bertuzzi. Todd Bertuzzi will be sidelined indefinitely due to his ailing back. Bertuzzi apparently left practice Friday to get an MRI after he could barely walk following Thursday's 5-1 win over St. Louis. Bertuzzi has long been bothered by his back and missed time due to it as recently as last season. The injury is just the latest this season in a long line of ailments for the wounded Red Wings, who will call up Joakim Andersson to replace Bertuzzi on the roster.

Todd Bertuzzi had a close call on Tuesday when he was hit in the eye by a stick, but that hasn't convinced him to wear a visor. Bertuzzi escaped the incident without a significant injury, but he admitted it was initially scary. Eye injuries or close calls have led to other players wearing visors, but Bertuzzi didn't have one on for Thursday's practice. "It's a personal decision," Bertuzzi said. "I don't ask you what pencil you like to use. I'm not trying to be a jerk. It's just the way it is. It's our office and we wear what we wear. Everybody wears different shoulder pads, different helmets and gloves, and all that."

The Detroit Red Wings will get Todd Bertuzzi (flu) back on Friday. Bertuzzi should play on the second line with Valtteri Filppula and Pavel Datsyuk. It was initially though that Bertuzzi could be out for a long time with mononucleosis, but fortunately it was later revealed that he was only dealing with the flu.

Todd Bertuzzi (flu) will probably return on Friday. Bertuzzi practiced on a line with Valtteri Filppula and Pavel Datsyuk on Thursday. Bertuzzi has missed Detroit's first three games with what was initially believed to be mononucleosis, but later revealed to be something less severe.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock expects to have some reinforcements in the lineup for Friday's game against Minnesota. Todd Bertuzzi (flu), Darren Helm (back) and Jakub Kindl (groin) are all projected to be OK to play versus the Wild. We'll wait for confirmation following the morning skate.

Todd Bertuzzi had tests for mononucleosis came back negative on Monday, so he is projected to make his return to Detroit's lineup on Friday. It was feared that he might miss weeks and possibly a month, after he experienced some symptoms late last week. Bertuzzi did not travel with the team for their two-game road trip to start the year and he will not play in Tuesday's home opener against Dallas.

Todd Bertuzzi is out indefinitely with mononucleosis. Bertuzzi was already doubtful for the Red Wings' season opener due to what was originally thought to be the flu. The Red Wings wouldn't offer a timetable for his return, but they did say that he would be out for "a while."

The Detroit Red Wings will be without Todd Bertuzzi when they open their season Saturday at St. Louis. Bertuzzi suffered a groin injury Thursday but is also sick, coach Mike Babcock said. If he feels better, Bertuzzi might join the Wings for Monday's game at Columbus. Forward Darren Helm will miss the Wings' first three games because of a back injury. But the team has plenty of forwards available, with Patrick Eaves, Cory Emmerton and Jan Mursak among the depth.
