"It's amazing when a guy just goes out and concentrates on the details of the game how other things follow.'' The 24-year-old may be on a decent run, but he's not worthy of a look in fantasy leagues.

With Kris Versteeg out with injury, Shawn Matthias got to play on the first line Thursday. The 24-year-old who was slotted with Stephen Weiss and Tomas Fleischmann played 17:11 and got one shot on goal. "I went out and just played hockey, didn't worry about anything else, controlled what I can and had fun,'' said Matthias, who also got some time on the power play. Matthias doesn't come too highly recommended just yet because he has never shown much in the way of scoring ability.

He is a bottom six forward in the NHL and while he capably fills that role, he will never be enough of a scorer to consider in almost every pool.

Shawn Matthias potted a goal in the Panthers' 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins Monday night. Despite the solid performance in this game, Matthias has little fantasy value. He has 17 points in 43 games with the Panthers this season.

Shawn Matthias scored two goals to lift the Panthers to a 3-1 win over Carolina Tuesday. Matthias broke a 1-1 tie in the third period with his fourth goal of the campaign then followed that up with an empty-netter to ice the game. Despite the solid performance in this game, Matthias has little fantasy value. Tomas Fleischmann scored the only other Panthers goal in the win.

Shawn Matthias won't face disciplinary action from the league for his hit on New Jersey defenseman Anton Volchenkov during Monday's match. Volchenkov left the game early and did not return after requiring about a dozen stitches for a cut lip and a bloodied forehead. "I didn't try and hurt the player," Matthias said. "You never try to hurt a player and hope he's OK. That wasn't my intent. I kept my shoulder down and went through his chest. Just from the size of me, I might have clipped his face a bit." He wasn't penalized on the play, but he did end up engaging in some fisticuffs later in the contest with Devils forward Rod Pelley. Matthias has five points in 19 games this season.
