It looks like Ryan Smyth will probably play on Saturday after being a healthy scratch on Tuesday. "I'm a competitor so, absolutely, it's tough to take," Smyth said of being scratched. "It's in our nature to play hockey and not sit and watch, but that was the coach's decision. He felt it was best for the team at the time. We'll move forward." Smyth plans to play smarter after accumulating 18 PIM in his last two games.

Ryan Smyth has been taking a lot of bad penalties of late. Smyth has been called for six minors in the last four games, including two for slashing, two for hooking, a tripping and an interference call. These penalties may be caused by Smyth not being able to keep up with the play anymore, a possibility for the veteran who will turn 37 on Feb. 21. He has only a goal and two points in 12 games this season with a minus-three rating so it is very hard to recommend him at this time.

Ryan Smyth scored his first goal of the season while short-handed in the Oilers 3-2 OT loss to the Vancouver Canucks. Smyth isn't close to the player he once was, and is now a third line player that will get some special teams time and could move up due to injuries. For now he's not getting the ice time or chances needed to be successful in fantasy formats so steer clear of Smyth unless injuries allow him to move up the depth chart.

Ryan Smyth knows at this stage of his career, he has to take on a bit of a different role. "I can check. I can kill penalties. Accepting those kind of roles when you are asked to is what makes a good team," Smyth said. He's been an offensive force for most of his career, but he's been on the decline for the last few seasons in that regard and it's hard to see him rebounding at the age of 36. Still, he's worth keeping an eye on if he ends up getting playing time with some of the Oilers' promising young forwards.

Ryan Smyth tallied two goals in Canada's 7-2 win over host club Davos in the Spengler Cup title game on Monday. "Captain Canada" led the team with six shots. The victory marked Canada's first Spengler Cup championship since 2007 and they benefited a great deal from the lockout. Patrice Bergeron had a goal and three assists, while John Tavares scored twice in the match.

Ryan Smyth will suit up for Canada at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. Canada's entry in the Spengler Cup is usually made up of Canadians playing in Europe, however, with the lockout in place there are plenty of Canadians who want the chance to put on the Canadian colors. Smyth is a veteran of many international games for Team Canada so the inclusion of 'Captain Canada' is no surprise. Also included on the Canadian side are Devan Dubnyk, Jonathan Bernier and Carlo Colaiacovo, all who have remained in North America during the lockout.

Ryan Smyth may play for Canada at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland later this month. He has been skating with the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings and hasn't played any games since last April. Smyth is believed to be on Hockey Canada's radar for the tournament and he hasn't turned them down before when he's invited to play at the World Championship.

36-year-old Ryan Smyth is hoping to win the Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers. Smyth inked a two-year/$4.5 million contract with Edmonton on Sunday. "I wouldn't have taken the deal if I wasn't OK with it, but I feel there's tremendous upside in the team, particularly with the acquisition of (defenceman Justin Schultz and first-round pick Nail Yakupov). He seems to be excited and ready and willing to be a part of it," said Smyth. Of course, it's still hard to believe that Edmonton will win the Stanley Cup in the next two years. They have great young players, but after three straight seasons of finishing at or near the bottom of the league, their first step needs to be to simply make the playoffs.

The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed veteran Ryan Smyth to a two-year/$4.5 million contract. The two sides had agreed to the length of contract in early May but money had been the sticking point. The 36-year-old had 46 points this season but after starting the year hot with 24 points in his first 22 games, Smyth had only 22 points in his final 60 games. Look for him to be a third line player in Edmonton alongside Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff as the Oilers have a lot of firepower on their top two lines.

While it appears both sides have agreed on a two-year contract, money is the sticking point in the re-signing of Ryan Smyth by the Edmonton Oilers. Smyth could be behind the eight-ball as both sides know he wants to re-sign and finish his career in Edmonton. The 36-year-old had 46 points this season but after starting the year hot with 24 points in his first 22 games, Smyth had only 22 points in his final 60 games. Stay tuned as it is likely the Oilers and Smyth will come to an agreement before he becomes a UFA on July 1.
