The Nashville Predators have acquired Paul Gaustad and a fourth-round pick from the Buffalo Sabres for a first-round draft pick. Many laughed at the Sabres for asking for a first-rounder for the defensive-minded Gaustad over the past few days, but it paid off in the end and they had to add a pick of their own to get it done. The 6-foot-5, 212-pound center gives the Preds a physical presence down the middle and one of the league's best faceoff men (56.8 percent this year). He has seven goals and 17 points on the year.

If the Buffalo Sabres decide to be sellers before the Feb. 27 trade deadline, Paul Gaustad could be one of the players dealt. Gaustad is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He's a bottom-six forward that's capable of chipping in offensively while still being responsible at his own end. Of the Sabres' players who have participated in at least half of the team's contests, Gaustad is one of just two with a rating of plus-one or higher. However, Gaustad doesn't sound like a man who wants to be dealt to a contender. "I've always wanted to be a Sabre and win in Buffalo," Gaustad said. "I've come to grow up here and my adult life has been in Western New York." His name is one worth remembering as we approach the trade deadline.

The 30-year-old center is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year and the skill sets that he brings to the table are typically desirable among teams heading for the playoffs. Gaustad is dependable in the faceoff circle and he plays a gritty style. He is also capable of chipping in offensively from time to time.

Paul Gaustad is expected to serve as a left winger on Saturday. Gaustad has spent the bulk of his time with the Sabres as a center, but Sabres coach Lindy Ruff thinks that he'll be able to make better use of his size as a winger. Gaustad has 13 points and 63 penalty minutes in 45 games this season.

Paul Gaustad had a hand in every Buffalo goal in the Sabres 3-1 win over Montreal Tuesday. Gaustad registered a goal and two assists in the victory while Ville Leino and Patrick Kaleta also tallied for the Sabres.

Buffalo center Paul Gaustad will be a game-time decision tonight at Montreal. An upper body injury incurred Jan. 18 against Chicago kept Gaustad out of the lineup the last three games.
