Nicklas Lidstrom (flu) streak of 213 consecutive games played came to an end on Wednesday.
Lidstrom made it through Detroit's morning skate, but felt worse as the day progressed. He's not on the All-Star roster, so he'll have plenty of time to rest and recover.

Nicklas Lidstrom (illness) is not expected to play on Wednesday night.
He will use the All-Star break to get healthy, as the Red Wings don't play again until Jan. 31 at Calgary. The ageless blueliner is having another strong year with 10 goals, 28 points and a plus-22 rating in 49 games.

Nicklas Lidstrom is currently tied for fourth place amongst blueliners with 19 points in 25 games.
He may be 41, but we've learnt at this point to never bet against him. Who knows if this will be his last season, but the Red Wings will surely offer him another contract if he wants to extend his career. He's 89 points away from Larry Murphy, who is fifth on the all-time defensemen leaderboard. Obviously, Lidstrom won't reach him this season, but he might end up surpassing him before he hangs up his skates.

Nicklas Lidstrom scored the only Detroit goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Wild.
Lidstrom was in line to receive credit for a game-winning goal until the Wings lost their 1-0 lead in the final minute and later were beaten in overtime, but Lidstrom owners can still be pleased about his general performance.

As expected, Nicklas Lidstrom doesn't appear to be spending much time thinking about his eventual retirement.
Lidstrom decided to play for at least one more season after he signed a one-year/$6.2 million contract extension in June. Although Lidstrom recorded 62 points and won the Norris Trophy in 2010-11, the mere fact that he's 41 makes curious about his future plans. Not surprisingly, right now he isn't thinking that long-term. "It's the same approach as last year: just one season at a time and, you know, I'm not looking too far ahead," Lidstrom said. "I'm just looking forward to the season."

Nicklas Lidstrom gave a very inspiring interview on Sunday.
Lidstrom explained why he loves hockey so much, including why he is back this season. "I think it's still so much fun to play hockey. I look forward to going to games and getting the adrenaline rush of playing in front of 20,000 fans and playing the game. That's what still drives me-a love of hockey." He should be productive again, especially if he plays the full 82 game slate.

The Detroit Red Wings will hold training camp two days earlier than usual this year.
The goal here is to get free agents more accustomed to life with the team. As well, all prospects from the Red Wings tournament roster will be attending camp. This should give the prospects a better chance of making the team out of camp.

Red Wings GM Ken Holland became an America citizen on Tuesday.
Holland took the oath after working with the Detroit Red Wings for almost three decades. He was born in Canada. "I just think that the most exciting thing is you get to vote, you get to participate in the election," Holland said. "We're American citizens. We're part of this country. A major part of our life has been down here. I forged a profession here in hockey, on and off the ice. It's a very exciting day for the Holland family."
