Matheson will not play Saturday afternoon, when the Panthers visit the Sabres, Joe Yerdon of NHL.com reports.

It appears that Matheson will simply be a healthy scratch, with Steven Kampfer taking his place in the lineup. Matheson has been terrific offensively, posting two goals and four points in the first seven games.

Matheson scored a goal in Thursday's loss to Washington, giving him three points in four games to open the season.

Two of those points are goals and he's taken a dozen shots on net, so Matheson's first full NHL season is off to quite a promising start. The 22-year-old isn't seeing much power-play time, and a promotion on that front could send his value higher, though it's worth noting that he managed just 20 points in 54 AHL games last year.

Matheson notched his first career point in Thursday's season-opening 2-1 win against the Devils, assisting on Aleksander Barkov's game-winning goal in overtime.

It was no cheapo, either -- Matheson went deep into the offensive zone, separated Devils defenseman Damon Severson from the puck with a hit a moment after Severson had stolen the puck from him, and found Barkov wide open for the goal. That's the sort of play that the Panthers are looking for from their 2012 first-round pick. While his offensive upside remains a bit limited, he should see plenty of opportunities to feed the puck to the Panthers' more accomplished scorers, as Matheson appears to be securely ensconced in Florida's second defensive pairing.

Matheson was reassigned to AHL Portland on Wednesday, Harvey Fialkov of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

Matheson picked up an assist in five playoff games with the Panthers but will now return to AHL Portland where spent he most of the 2015-16 season. The 22-year-old should battle for a roster spot on the blue line again next season, and his 20 points in 54 games in the minors could make him a bit intriguing if he can manage to make his way to the man advantage.

Saturday's game against the Hurricanes will mark the end of the regular season for the Panthers, and Matheson seemingly has a good chance to draw into that contest since Steve Kampfer (undisclosed) and Erik Gudbranson (upper body) are ailing.

After less than two weeks with the Panthers while drawing into only two games, Matheson is returned to AHL Portland to continue his development. The former first-round pick showed a deft scoring touch during his three-year career at Boston College and has put up 14 points in 43 games for AHL Portland. He'll be a name to watch down the line, but as of now, isn't ready to contribute full-time at the NHL level.

There was some thought that Matheson -- the Panthers' 2012 first-round pick -- would make the team out of camp, but he'll instead open his first full pro season in the AHL. The Panthers really like Matheson's all-around game, but any fantasy upside Matheson may offer is of the long-term variety.

Matheson tallied his first professional point in AHL San Antonio's 4-1 victory over Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Matheson, the team's first round selection in 2012, is playing in his second game with San Antonio after playing three years at Boston College. For Boston College, he scored 71 points in 112 games and was a captain on the team his junior year. As of now, his offensive skills are ahead of his defensive skills, but he has good size at 6'2" and should contribute sooner rather than later on the Panthers' blue line.

Matheson signed an entry-level contract with the Panthers on Wednesday. The 21-year-old completed a successful junior campaign at Boston College, finishing as the team leader in scoring from the blue line with 25 points (three goals, 22 assists) in 38 games. Matheson will head to AHL San Antonio as part of an amateur tryout and could see time with the parent club as early as next season.
