Hoffman was only a member of the Sharks for a few hours, as GM Doug Wilson had acquired him in a trade involving a total of four players and two 2020 draft picks early Tuesday morning. Florida failed to stand out in the Atlantic Division this past season, but adding Hoffman should boost the Panthers power play and it gives the team another proven playmaker to bolster the top-six group. Hoffman, who has accumulated 230 points (107 goals, 123 assists) over 342 career games -- all with Ottawa -- will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2019-20 season.

Hoffman was brought in via trade -- along with Cody Donaghy and a 2020 fifth-round pick -- in exchange for Mikkel Boedker, Julius Bergman and a 2020 sixth-round selection.

Trading away Hoffman was inevitable in light of the allegations his fiance was harassing Erik Karlsson and his wife on social media. This was evident in Ottawa general manager Pierre Dorion's statement; "Today's trade showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice." The winger has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, but the damage has already been done. For the Sharks, they get a player who has scored 20-plus goals in four straight seasons and has topped the 50-point mark in three consecutive years for a relatively low cost in Boedker and Bergman.

Erik Karlsson's wife Melinda officially filed an allegation of harassment against Hoffman's longtime girlfriend and now fiancee, Monika Caryk, the Ottawa Citizen reports.

For his part, Hoffman has denied the claim that Caryk has posted derogatory comments against both Erik and Melinda Karlsson, condemning cyberbullying and saying that it's "150 percent not (them)" who are behind the attacks. On the other side of the coin, Julie Turris, the wife of ex-Senators teammate Kyle Turris, has claimed that things crossed the line from cyberbullying to "something entirely different in April". Whatever the truth is, there is no evidence of friction between the two players, but this can't be good for the Senators' chances of retaining both Karlsson and Hoffman. Both players are on the trade block, and this makes it more likely that at least one will be dealt during the offseason.

Hoffman set up three of his team's five goals, but it wasn't enough to prevent his side from being on the wrong end of a 6-5 score against Winnipeg on Monday.

In a year where everything has gone wrong for the Senators, Hoffman has been one of the few things to go right. He's topped 55 points for the third straight year and is one assist short of his career high of 35. He's been one of the few Ottawa players owners can count on.

Hoffman scored the game-winning overtime goal and added an assist in a 3-2 overtime win against the Stars.

That makes three games in a row where Hoffman has tallied two points, and beyond that he has 12 points in his last 10 contests. The 28-year-old's 9.5 shooting percentage has held his numbers down a bit, but he's still crossed the 50-point mark for the third season in a row.

Additionally, Tuesday's two tallies give Hoffman his fourth consecutive 20-goal campaign. With a top offensive role, and the Sens scoring more of late (3.57 goals per game in March), Hoffman also has an outside chance of topping last season's career-high 61 points.

The streaky Hoffman seems to be on the same page as Matt Duchene right now, scoring three goals and eight points in his last eight games, and with 19 goals and 47 points on the season, he's now on the verge of his fourth straight 20-goal campaign and third straight 50-point campaign.

It's definitely important to note that Hoffman is a prime candidate to be dealt before the trade deadline, but there's also no guarantee that a change in scenery will have immediate success.
