Murray was perfect Thursday, turning aside 38 shots to earn his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over the Maple Leafs.

Making only his second start of the season, Pittsburgh's No.1 goalie frustrated a Toronto team that came into Wednesday's contest having scored the most goals in the league (33). Now with four days off between games, Murray, who is coming off a concussion, will benefit from added rest and should be back between the pipes Wednesday when the Penguins take on the Oilers.

Murray will defending the cage for Thursday's road matchup with Toronto, James Mirtle of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

Murray will be making his first start since sustaining a concussion in practice Oct. 8. The netminder will no doubt be hoping to put his disappointing start to the season behind him after giving up 11 goals in the opening two outings of the year. As long as he can stay healthy -- something the Thunder Bay native has struggled with throughout his young career -- he should see the bulk of the starts for the Penguins the rest of the way.

If you're Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, a part of you has to be hoping that Murray ultimately isn't needed for relief duty against the Habs. The Penguins have yet to announce a starter for their matchup with Montreal, but if Murray is unable to go, it appears as though he'll have a very good shot at returning to action Tuesday against Vancouver. Pittsburgh should release another update on the 24-year-old netminder's status following Saturday's morning skate.

Coach Mike Sullivan told reporters, "(Murray) will not be available for tonight. He's still progressing and his status is day-to-day," ruling him out versus the Golden Knights on Thursday.

While Murray seemed to take a much more optimistic stance when doing his post-practice interviews, Sullivan shut down the idea that the netminder would be available to serve as the backup to Casey DeSmith on Thursday. Prior to puck drop, the club will likely promote Tristan Jarry from the minors. Whether Murray will be able to suit up against the Canadiens on Saturday remains to be seen.

The Ontario native defeated the Habs in his only appearance against them in 2017-18.

Murray looked a little rusty at times, in contrast to a well-reviewed preseason performance heading into Thursday's home opener. The 24-year-old is expected to get a heavy workload behind a vaunted offensive attack in 2018-19, so play him at every opportunity.
