Read was playing in his first game at the NHL level since Oct. 29. He added two shots, two hits and three blocked shots in the appearance. His stay in the NHL after Friday's recall is not expected to last long and his playing time is likely to be limited, but the goal may help to persuade coach Bruce Boudreau to give him a longer look.

Read fell out of favor in Philadelphia, but he signed a one-year two way deal with the Wild this summer. From a fantasy hockey perspective, it's never a good look when a veteran forward toils in the minors, and that happened all too often for Read in his final season contracted by the Flyers. Based on him being waived Saturday, it doesn't appear that he'll be bucking that trend despite a change of scenery.

Read appeared in 19 games with the Flyers last season and managed to score one goal, and he also appeared in 33 games for Lehigh Valley of the AHL and posted 16 total points. The 32-year-old has spent each of the last seven years with the Flyers, recording 87 goals and 100 assists in that span, but he will now return to where in played college hockey in Minnesota for his eighth NHL season.

After making the opening day roster Read was quickly dispatched to the minors after being a regular in the press box, but was able to earn a promotion back to the big club March 8 after collecting 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in the AHL. Although Read's trade used to be depth scoring, he's switched into the role of a defensive forward, as he frequently appeared on the fourth line and with Sean Couturier on the penalty kill down the stretch. The 30-year-old's due to become an unrestricted free agent, and with Philadelphia in the middle of a youth movement, he could very well don a jersey that isn't orange and black in 2018-19.

Since then, the 31-year-old has been plying his trade in the minors. Though the veteran has two 20-goal seasons to his name those days are behind him, and Read will likely serve as a depth forward with limited upside.
