Sometimes a little dose of reality can get players going, and in this case, coach Bruce Boudreau elected to deploy that strategy with one of his skilled players. Fiala has been almost invisible through the first five games this season, collecting just one assist and seven shots despite averaging 2:52 of power-play time. The Wild will hope this will spark a turnaround for the 23-year-old going forward. In Fiala's stead, Gerald Mayhew is expected to make his NHL debut.

Fiala had just one shot on goal, was a minus-1 and registered one hit in 16:18 of ice time in Thursday's season-opening loss to the Predators. He had 2:41 of power-play ice time.

Fiala was outshone on at least one night by the player he was traded for, as Mikeal Granlund scored a goal and had another nullified on a high-sticking call. Still, Fiala was one of the few standout players in a game (along with his second line) where the Wild struggled to find offense. It's noteworthy he got significant power-play time. He could shuffle between the top two lines as Minnesota experiments to find combinations that work well early in the season.

Fiala's immigration paperwork has gone through, which clears the way for him to join the Wild on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

Fiala will certainly be a little behind having missed nearly two weeks of training camp, but that shouldn't stop him from being ready to go Opening Night versus Nashville on Oct. 3. The winger notched seven points in 19 games with the Wild last season and should be in position to challenge the 40-point mark again in 2019-20.

Coach Bruce Boudreau hopes Fiala will have his immigration issues resolved by Wednesday or Thursday of next week, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports.

No surprise here, as the Wild acquired Fiala at the trade deadline last season with the obvious intention of holding onto him. Given Fiala's up-and-down career thus far -- 48 goals, 56 assists in 223 games -- it will be interesting to see what kind of agreement Minnesota will come to with the talented winger.

Fiala has collected seven points -- four coming on the power play -- in 15 games with the Wild. The winger is up to 39 points in 79 appearances this season. Since being included in the return for Mikael Granlund, Fiala has seen his ice time per game increase by 1:20, and he's made good use of the premium scoring opportunities. He had just seven of his 32 points on the power play in his 64 games with the Predators.

Fiala has six points but is a minus-7 in his last 13 games since he was traded to Minnesota on Feb. 25.

The 22-year-old came into Minnesota highly touted by GM Paul Fenton, the man who drafted him in Nashville. Unfortunately, Fiala hasn't quite lived up to the hype, producing just under a point per-game while averaging 3:20 of power-play time. Fiala has been able to run his season point total up to 38 in 77 games, and could be counted upon heavily as the Wild fight for a playoff spot.
