Like many of the forwards for the Islanders, Pageau got off to a plodding start which hurt his overall line. Pageau is still a top third-line center and will likely remain in that role for the Islanders no matter who the next head coach is.

Pageau figures to jump back into the lineup following his three-game stint on the shelf while in the NHL's protocols. After a slow start to the season, the veteran center has discovered his offensive game of last with six goals and two assists in his last nine contests. Still, despite his recent performance Pageau is unlikely to move into a top-six role which will limit his opportunities to produce at a high level.

Pageau was placed on the COVID-19 list and will not play Thursday against the Rangers.

Pageau will be absent from the lineup for the first time since Jan. 13. The veteran forward has 37 points through 74 games this season, including 22 over his last 29 appearances. The Islanders' next game is Saturday against Buffalo but he'll need to clear protocols before he can get back on the ice.

Pageau got the Islanders on the board at 11:47 of the first period. The 29-year-old had a four-point effort in his last game Sunday versus the Devils, and he stayed hot with the tally Tuesday. For the season, he's up to 14 goals, 34 points, 112 shots on net, 143 hits and a plus-2 rating through 67 contests.

Pageau scored three goals, one on the power play, and added an assist in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Devils.

EDGE Analysis

The hat trick was the fourth of his career, as Pageau collected the Islanders' first three goals before helping set up Kyle Palmieri for the game-winner late in the third period. Pageau snapped a 13-game goal drought with the performance, and on the season he has a modest 13 goals and 33 points through 66 contests.

Pageau had what would've been his 11th goal of the season disallowed in the Islander's 4-1 loss to the Lightning on Sunday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

EDGE Analysis

The goal was called off because Kyle Palmieri clearly crossed the blue line before the puck did. Palmieri was also why the Islanders had a goal waved off Saturday versus the Bruins as it was ruled he touched it with a high stick. That was the third goal this season that Palmieri has had waved off. As for Pageau, he's had another average season with just 10 goals and 28 points in 62 games for the Islanders. Pageau had 26 goals for the Senators and Islanders during the 2019-20 season but has failed to crack the 20-goal mark in any other season.

Pageau has gone six games without lighting the lamp for the Islanders.

Pageau does have four assists during that span, so all has not been lost for the third-line center. Pageau also has a rating of plus-4 during those contests to improve his season-long rating to minus-2. Pageau is part of a deep center corps for the Islanders, but 10 goals in 58 games is probably less than they were hoping for when they signed him to a six-year, $30 million contract in February of 2020.
