The star blueliner's absence leaves the Senators with a gaping hole to fill in the back end. Patrick Sieloff was promoted from AHL Belleville on Tuesday to take his spot in the lineup, but it will be impossible for Ottawa to replace Karlsson's 56 points -- eight goals and 48 assists -- through 66 games.

As soon as the 2017-18 season wraps up, the rumor mill will once again start circulating regarding Karlsson's future in Ottawa.

Karlsson had two assists and two shots on net in a 3-2 overtime win against the Stars on Friday.

Karlsson has had some struggles, and injuries, this season, but you wouldn't know it by his recent play. The Swede has 14 points over his last nine games. He also has 48 assists in 65 games, putting him on pace to notch 50 helpers once again. For a defenseman, that's amazing.

Karlsson scored an unassisted goal and added an assist during Tuesday's 7-4 win over Tampa Bay.

EDGE Analysis

This was the fifth multi-point showing through eight games for Karlsson, and he's now up to nine goals and 47 assists through 64 contests for the campaign. Fantasy players often overlook his contributions in the shot (172) and blocked shot (106) columns, which are particularly valuable in daily contests and make him a high-floor, high-ceiling option. It's also pretty clear that any potential off-ice distractions aren't impacting Karlsson's fantasy upside.

EDGE Analysis

Since not being moved at the trade deadline, Karlsson has looked like a man reborn, racking up four multi-point showings in seven games for a total of 10 points (two goals, eight assists). Sens fans shouldn't get their hopes up that he'll still be in Ottawa next season, but wherever the 27-year-old is playing he should remain one of the elite fantasy defensemen in the NHL.

A lot has gone wrong for Ottawa this season, and with a lot of potential off-ice distractions in play for the star defenseman, fantasy owners should be thrilled with his improved production. Additionally, considering his track record, it wouldn't be surprising if his strong run continued through the end of the season, either.

Karlsson posted three assists and a plus-3 rating in a 5-4 victory over the Golden Knights on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

It's been an absolutely dreadful season for the two-time Norris Trophy winner, but Friday was a very good night. He recorded his first three-point game since early January and snapped a five-game streak where he posted a negative rating. Still, Karlsson owns just six goals and a minus-28 rating this season, giving him his worst production since he was injured in 2012-13.

Karlsson had a goal, a power-play assist and a minus-1 rating in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Washington.

EDGE Analysis

Still a Senator after the trade deadline, Karlsson was plagued by his usual rating woes even on this two-point night. He's now a dreadful minus-31 in that category to go with 44 points in 57 games. While most defensemen would take that offensive production in a heartbeat, it's far below the lofty standard Karlsson has set for himself with an average of 73.3 points per campaign over the previous four.

EDGE Analysis

This is a significant change from the expectation in the Ottawa media that Karlsson will be dealt after the season now that the trade deadline has passed. Karlsson owns a home in Ottawa and seems genuine in his desire to remain in Canada's capital, but he's also said in the past that he will not take a hometown discount to remain with the Senators. It seems likely that Karlsson will assess his team's possible future in July, when he would be eligible to either sign a contract extension or play out his final year on his current deal.
