Toews was extended a qualifying offer by the Islanders on Monday, Newsday reports.

Toews is considered to be one of the top defensive prospects in the Islanders system, but missed a good chunk of last season due to a shoulder injury. The QO is for $874,125 but this was just a formality as Toews is still very much in the future plans for the Islanders.

This is a big blow for both the Islanders and for Toews. He is considered to be no worse than a second pair defender and likely would've been recalled by the team had he been healthy at this point in time. Toews was scheduled to begin his NHL career no later than the beginning of the 2018-19 season but this injury and it's rehabilitation now puts that into question also.

Toews was reassigned to AHL Bridgeport on Monday.

Toews racked up five goals and 40 helpers in his first professional season. The Quinnipiac University product will likely spend the majority of the 2017-18 campaign in the minors, but could get the occasional call-up during the year.

Toews is not related to Chicago's star forward Jonathan Toews, but he's still one impressive individual. The 23-year-old is a terrific passer from the blue, as evidenced by his 40 helpers in 76 games with the AHL's Sound Tigers last season. The Islanders' 2014 fourth-round (108th overall) draft choice has yet to make his NHL debut, however, so it'll be interesting to see what's in store for him this year. His getting a look this late in training camp bodes well for his near-term outlook.
