The Islanders are off until Feb. 1, which means Toews and Michael Dal Colle, who was also reassigned Wednesday, will continue drawing into games for the sake of expediting their development. Based on a previous report, it sounds like there's a good chance Toews will ultimately return to the Islanders even if seventh-year blueliner Thomas Hickey (upper body) comes back after the All-Star break.

Toews has looked very comfortable playing with Scott Mayfield since being called up from the AHL. Toews is one of the Islanders top prospects, but the original thought was that he would be sent back down when Hickey was healthy enough to return to the team. That may not happen now as a case can easily be made that Toews is a top four defender for the Isles and maybe Adam Pelech could be on the outside looking in or a trade to alleviate the glut of defenders on the roster could be in the immediate future as well.

Toews scored a goal and fired three shots on net in Tuesday's loss to the Hurricanes.

Toews received a pass from Anders Lee and quickly sent a snap shot into the back of Carolina's net. He now has a point in three straight games (two goals, one assist) while firing 11 shots on goal in that span. Toews is playing well with the big club, but the Islanders will need to make a decision on their blue line when Thomas Hickey (upper body) returns, which appears to be soon.

Toews scored the overtime winner on his sixth shot in Thursday's 3-2 triumph over Chicago.

Nobody would have batted an eyelash if told before the game that it would end in a Toews OT winner, though they'd be expecting Chicago captain Jonathan (no relation) to be the Toews lighting the lamp. Instead, Devon potted New York's 50th shot of the contest for his first NHL point. What a moment for the 24-year-old rookie playing in just his fifth NHL games.

Toews will make his NHL debut for the Islanders on Sunday when they take on the Stars, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

Toews will take the place of Johnny Boychuk who will miss the game due to the birth of his son. Toews will be on the third pair with Luca Sbisa, but is also expected to see some time on the second power-play unit. Toews is considered to be one of the top prospects for the Islanders and it will remain to be seen if he sticks with the club should he play well and current starters, Johnny Boychuk (personal) and Thomas Hickey (upper body) return to the club Friday.

Based on Toews' last-minute release from training camp, he may not be far away from seizing a meaningful role in the NHL.

Toews is currently still with the Islanders, but head coach Barry Trotz stated Monday that he would prefer Toews to be playing everyday somewhere rather than sitting in the press box for the Islanders. Including Toews, the Islanders currently have eight NHL ready defenders in camp. While the Islanders could carry two extra defensemen, that would seem unlikely, especially when you consider they have tough decisions on which forwards to keep also.
